This position is typically filled at an annual salary of $31,200.00 or Salary for this position is commensurate with education and job experience.

The INDOT Vincennes District is in search of a Highway Maintenance Worker (Highway Technician 3) to join our team. Highway Maintenance Workers keep INDOT assets in good working condition to ensure customer satisfaction, perform snow and ice removal and related maintenance duties by operation of snow plow and other winter operations duties as required. Complies with INDOT Safety Policies and Procedures. A CDL is required for this position.

  • Operates basic highway maintenance and traffic equipment to maintain, repair, and clean highways and right-of-ways;

  • Moves and loads supplies and materials;

  • Winter operations duties including snow and ice removal;

  • Maintains, repairs and installs traffic signs, route markers, and pavement markings;

  • Performs emergency response activities such as: clean-up, traffic control, lane closures, placement of signs, and erecting barricades;

  • Performs equipment maintenance such as: minor repairs, preventative maintenance, refueling, and pre-trip inspections;

  • Performs miscellaneous labor tasks;

  • Performs job documentation tasks such as entry into the Work Management System (WMS);

  • Provides assistance to the public by responding to general inquiries, explaining delays, etc.;

  • May perform basic construction inspection duties, as needed; and,

  • Performs other related job duties as assigned.

What We're Looking For

High school graduate or equivalent preferred;

Must possess a valid driver's license;

Must possess a valid commercial driver's license (CDL) or must obtain within 90 days of employment. The Indiana Department of Transportation provides CDL training, pays for eligible employees to take CDL exams, and reimburses employees for eligible expenses for obtaining a CDL including the CDL permit and license;

Must be able to lift 50 pounds;

Ability to perform physical activities such as lifting, dragging, stooping, standing and walking for long periods of time;

Must be able to endure exposure to inclement weather;

Must have ability to read, write, and communicate clearly;

Ability to operate specialty traffic equipment (e.g. bucket trucks, paint equipment, etc);

Ability to follow directions and work as part of a team.

Salary for this position is commensurate with education and job experience The INDOT Vincennes District is in search of an Equipment Mechanic 2 in our Fleet Department to join our team. To perform preventative maintenance and service on cars and light trucks, heavy duty trucks, aerial lift trucks, paving equipment, excavating equipment, tractors, generators, lawn movers, chain saws, weed eaters, pumps, and other motorized equipment as assigned by supervisor. Test drive state vehicle/equipment and other motorized equipment to ensure proper operation after completion of repairs. Supervise other Mechanics on a limited basis; * Rebuild, replace and/or repair major parts on cars and light trucks, heavy duty trucks, and heavy equipment (e.g., exhaust system, fuel injection, electrical systems, transmission, drive train, mechanical and air suspension, charging systems, air and hydraulic brakes); * Performs minor repairs or other related mechanical work (e.g., adjusts valves; changes and repairs all types of tires; cleans or replaces diesel injectors; repairs or replaces hydraulic components; ; * Install snow plow blades and make repairs on damaged plow assemblies; * Perform minor body repair work; * Maintain Equipment Management System (EMS) records on parts used and work performed on equipment and orders and/or picks up parts; * Service and repair of highway equipment in the field; use welding equipment to straighten and fabricate metal; * Recognize performance issues for both gas and diesel engines and properly diagnose them. * Inspect vehicles/equipment for damage; * Snow removal when necessary and other related duties as required (e.g., keep garage area, equipment and tools clean and orderly; mow grass; operate snow plow, tow truck or other equipment; repair mowers and sharpens blades; pump gasoline and diesel fuel and maintain daily records of same; * Perform service calls on roadside when equipment is disabled. * Attend appropriate training school, safety meetings, mechanic meetings or related meetings; * Order and/or pick up parts when required by supervisor; * Provide service and repair of vehicles and equipment on emergency basis; * Perform other related maintenance duties as assigned by supervisor. Difficulty of Work: Employee exercises judgment in planning, organizing and establishing work priorities. Employee must also interpret and apply policies, plans and specifications based on the work program. When guidelines do not exist, the incumbent must use considerable judgment in selecting and adapting methods to fit these unusual or complex situations. Responsibility: The supervisor gives general directions, but the incumbent works independently in diagnosing problems and deciding which adjustments and repairs are necessary. The incumbent may consult the supervisor or other personnel with especially difficult or complex problems. Judgments are made within the framework of accepted trade practices and procedures. Personal Work Relationships: Contacts are with other employees within INDOT. Physical Effort: Work alone on most tasks; stand or bend continuously; lift &/or use mechanical equipment (e.g., hoist) to transport up to 50-100 lbs. of automotive parts or tires; use limbs/fingers easily to perform manual functions. Working Conditions: The incumbent may be exposed to dirt, loud noise, grease, dust, gas fumes & other unpleasant conditions. Also may work outside exposed to unpleasant weather conditions and may be on call 24 hrs./day, 7 days/week High School Graduate or equivalent; * Minimum of three years experience in hydraulic maintenance, diagnostics, and repair; * Minimum of five years experience in equipment and fleet maintenance;-Extensive knowledge of and ability to use tools associated with vehicle and motorized equipment repair * Working knowledge of appropriate safety practices associated with repair and maintenance heavy equipment, vehicles and/or motorized equipment; * Extensive knowledge of heavy and light duty vehicle and equipment repair. * Extensive knowledge of hydraulics and how do properly diagnosis and repair. * Ability to repair all types of equipment that is required to perform various types of highway maintenance activities such as snow plowing, paving, chip spreading, excavating, traffic line painting, traffic signal repair, and traffic sign replacement. * Skill in operating hand & power tools related to repair & maintenance of vehicles & equipment; * Ability to understand system of mechanical procedures; * Ability to use welding and steel cutting equipment. * Ability to carry out oral and written instructions and to complete records and reports; * Ability to use repair manuals and parts catalogues; * Must have ability to read, write, and communicate clearly; * Ability to follow directions and work as a part of a team; * Ability to perform physical activities such as lifting, dragging, stooping, standing and walking for long periods of time; * Possession of a valid commercial driver's license or must obtain within 90 days of employment; * Must provide own tools and agency approved steel toe boots; * Ability to work in a multi-functional team.
