Incumbents of positions in this series assign and monitor the work of highway maintenance crews; check and report violations of departmental permits; supervise erection, painting and repair of guardrails, snow fences, etc.; supervise snow removal operations; and perform other duties as required. The basic purpose of this work is to oversee workers and equipment and to maintain and repair highways in an assigned section or a state highway district.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1.Acts as working foreman, participating in activities along with supervisor, subordinate(s) and/or contractors.
2.Inspects area of responsibility for defects involving trees, signs, road surface conditions, bridge decks, side slopes and sight distance.
3.Monitors area of responsibility during snow and ice operations.
4.Plans daily work schedule, participates in and assigns work to subordinates daily.
5.Supervises and participates in highway cleaning, mowing and equipment maintenance; operates maintenance equipment in a safe and efficient manner according to MassDOT rules and regulations.
6.Supervises and participates in the operation of trucks, snowplows, sanders, over-guardrail & tractor drawn mowers and sweepers in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations, department policy and provisions of the governing license issued by the Department of Public Safety.
7.Performs routine maintenance and repairs on vehicle and equipment such as lube, oil & fuel changes, cleaning & checking tires, battery, oil and coolant levels, circle checks, etc.
8.Supervises and participates in catch basin, shoulder and roadway surface repair, along with the installation, repair and replacement of signs.
9.Coordinates work zone safety setups.
10. Responds to emergency highway incidents involving crashes. Assists agencies in these matters, detours, etc.
11. Available for any and all emergency situations on a 24/7 basis.
12. Generates work orders and tracks work performed in a Maintenance Asset Management System.
13. Other duties as required and/or assigned.
Qualifications Required at Hire:
1.Knowledge of the methods and techniques of highway maintenance and repair.
2.Knowledge of the types and uses of tools, equipment and materials used in highway maintenance and repair.
3.Ability to read, interpret and enforce departmental maintenance manual pertaining to highway maintenance, equipment and snow & ice control.
4.Ability to plan and supervise the work of others.
5.Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
7.Working knowledge of computer based office systems; email, work processing, databases and spreadsheets.
Candidate should be available to respond to emergency calls on a 24/7 basis in all weather conditions.
Candidate is expected to work snow and ice operations.
CDL Class B or better preferred. 2A/2B and 4A or 4E and 4G Hoisting Licenses preferred.

Minimum Entrance Requirements:
Applicants must have at least one year of full-time or equivalent part- time, experience in the construction, maintenance and/or repair of roads and/or highways.
Applicants must possess a current and valid Class B commercial driver's license (CDL).
