We are currently seeking a Highway Project Engineer to join our growing Transportation Group in our Indianapolis, IN office.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • The primary duties will be to lead highway design projects.

  • Overseeing junior-level staff in the preparation of calculations, plans, specifications, cost estimates, technical reports, and public presentations.

  • Demonstrates a strong ability to work and/or lead in a team environment.

  • Ensure QA/QC procedures and understands basic business practices and laws related to engineering.

  • Develop roadway plans to coincide with milestones of a project and when revisions need to be addressed.

  • Selects procedures and checks to complete reports and calculations.

  • May assist with technical scope proposal development.

  • May be responsible for large portions of projects with supervision.

  • May oversee work by level I and II Engineers.

  • Completes field assignments, when appropriate.

  • Other related duties, as assigned.

EDUCATION AND LICENSURE

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering required.
  • P.E. license is required.

SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5+ years of civil design experience required.

  • At least 3 years of highway design experience preferred.

  • Basic knowledge of hydraulic design experience preferred.

  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office.

  • Experience with Microstation and InRoads preferred.

  • Knowledge of INDOT transportation standards, procedures, and specifications preferred.

  • Good verbal and written communications skills with a strong ability to work in a team environment.

  • Exhibits a willingness to provide assistance to senior level engineers and project managers.

  • Participation in a professional organization is preferred.

Summary/Objective: The Highway Engineer performs senior level engineering and supervisory work for the Indiana Department of Transportation. Work is performed independently with occasional direction by a department supervisor. Essential Job Responsibilities: The essential functions of this role are as follows: * Directs practices for overseeing the construction of highway road and bridge projects; * Provides direction in reviewing and interpreting plans, specifications and construction methods with contractors; * Prepares unique, unusual or complicated design plans or reviews similar plans designed by consultants for bridges, roads and related traffic projects; * Directs methods for developing and administering major field traffic operations, such as: complicated interchanges or intersection layouts, addition of auxiliary lanes and access roads, signage, lighting and traffic signals; * Trains, assigns and reviews the work of subordinates on the proper review and inspection of bridges, to provide normal maintenance, cost-effective repair work or major rehabilitation; * Directs, supervises and reviews revised or newly adopted specifications and directs policies to keep field testing functions current; * Provides senior level engineering expertise to field maintenance functions to resolve complicated maintenance problems and provide effective and timely maintenance services; * Conducts senior level engineering work in the engineering services and support fields, research, geotechnical engineering, land surveying and special studies; The job description is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that are required of the employee. Preferred Experience: Requirements: * Knowledge and skill typically acquired through a baccalaureate degree plus comparable work experience, related academic training plus comparable work experience; * Must have certification as a Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Indiana; * Broad knowledge of and ability to apply civil engineering theories, principles, methods and procedures to the engineering specialty of the individual; * Broad knowledge of and ability to apply federal and state laws, rules, regulations and procedures governing individuals filed of specialization; * Broad knowledge of the specification standards an special provisions associated with the individual's field of specialization; * Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply management principles and practices and department administrative regulations, policies and procedures; * Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply computer aided design and drafting functions to field of specialization; * Ability to use initiative and creativity when making technical and managerial recommendations and decisions; * Ability to prepare and review complex design plans and reports relating to individual's field of specialization; * Ability to organize, plan, formulate and carry out programs and policies; * Effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.
