Job Responsibilities

Performs skilled labor and operates heavy duty equipment such as: motor grader, tractor with ditcher and slope mower to clean, repair and re-grade shoulders and ditches or snow and ice removal. Operates a large backhoe for cleaning ditches, installing and repairing driveways, removing and clearing fallen trees from roadway and other debris.

Operates and maintains equipment (tandem dump truck, asphalt roller, sweeper, distributer, etc.) in roadway bituminous re-treatment work to seal cracked surfaces, A-1 and paving roads to restore life to road performing duties throughout the county to include; patching roadway, cleaning ditches and performing manual skilled labor. Operates front-end loaders, self-propelled belt loaders, and power brooms. Operates a forklift in loading and unloading maintenance and construction materials and supplies.

Operates and maintains electric/gas powered tools in various phase of roadway maintenance such as chainsaw, weed eater, pole pruner, and bush ax. Performs other related maintenance duties such as pothole patching, cleaning ditches, tree removal, cutting dead trees on right-of-way and low hanging limbs over roadway, concrete repairs, litter control, removing dead animals, shoulder repair, etc. Assists during emergencies and inclement weather and when crew is in an on-call status, is available 24 hours per day.

Sets up traffic control according to MUTCD Standards to warn motorists of roadwork ahead. May flag traffic as required. Performs daily preventative maintenance inspections on all assigned vehicles and equipment. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

One (1) year of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement:

A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

Physical Requirement: The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material.

Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
