The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking to fill multiple Highway Maintenance Worker 2 positions for the Northwest Region Incident Response Team. These roles are essential in reducing congestion by quickly and safely removing incidents to restore highway operations. Safety, both public and employee, is a top priority in all activities. The positions support the WSDOT mission and National Unified Goal through Traffic Incident Management best practices. A focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion is crucial in fostering a respectful and healthy work environment.
What to Expect
You may need to work weekends, holidays, and various shifts to respond to emergencies. Be prepared to report to duty within 60 minutes of an after-hours call. 24/7 availability in all weather, alone or as part of a team. Expect long hours, standby, and call-back duty as needed.
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 will:
Patrol assigned NWR IRT roving area.
Operate an authorized emergency vehicle with tow capabilities.
Observe and address potential or actual traffic impediments.
Respond to and clear incidents during peak commute times.
Obtain and/or maintain valid certifications in Flagging and First Aid/CPR Training.
Assist crews in setting up and performing emergency traffic control.
Act as a first responder at accident scenes, spills, or other emergency situations.
Communicate and coordinate with police and fire departments during emergencies.
Provide the TMC with on-scene information regarding incidents.
Maintain daily reports and input incident tracking data.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
In addition to:
Possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted Washington State Class A Commercial Driver's License.
CDL Endorsement "N," or ability to acquire within 6 months of employment.
Operators must demonstrate the ability to communicate on multiple radio systems or other electronic devices, including computers, in a brief and concise manner.
The skills to safely work in heavy traffic conditions without continuous supervision.
The skills to safely perform emergency operations, including but not limited to changing flat tires, providing gas, jump-starting vehicles, deploying appropriate traffic control, etc.
All operators must have the ability to provide positive, professional customer service in hazardous situations.
Ability to use the proper techniques when removing debris to a safe location.
Completion of National Incident Management System (NIMS) Courses in FEMA ICS 100, 200, 700 and 800, or ability to acquire within 6 months of employment.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have the following:
Strong awareness of WSDOT highway maintenance procedures.
Experience in traffic control per MUTCD, including planning, setting signs and cones, and flagging operations.
Be available for standby when assigned.
Working knowledge of the WSDOT rules, policies, and procedures.
Experience with radio communication equipment, computers, phones, and other electronic equipment.
Comfortable with working near high volume and high-speed traffic.

This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.
In addition to the salary range listed, a general wage increase of 3% will be applied for all state employees on July 1, 2024.
The salary listed includes the legislative-approved 10% Group C premium for HMW2 positions located in Seattle, WA, King County.
The salary listed includes the legislative-approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County.
This position is not eligible for remote work.

In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
