The Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking candidates for the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 position. As a journey-level member of the regional maintenance organization, this role operates diverse highway equipment and tools under the guidance of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3. Responsibilities include maintaining and repairing highways and structures to facilitate safe and efficient transportation. The position involves performing highly skilled maintenance tasks and occasionally leading a crew in the absence of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3. What to Expect

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker 2 will:

  • Perform day-to-day highway maintenance operations under the direction of a Highway Specialist 2, HMW3, HMW4, or Maintenance Supervisor.

  • Operate class A, B, or C equipment and power tools and perform manual labor for asphalt and concrete pavement maintenance, drainage repair, and erosion control.

  • Install, maintain, and repair safety features such as guardrail fences, impact attenuators, and signage.

  • Haul materials, remove litter and debris, and perform routine inspections of highway features.

  • Use iPads and computers to track and document daily work activities, including inventory management and reporting.

  • Transport up to 50 lbs. of heavy equipment and materials between work sites using ergonomic risk reduction techniques.

  • Assist in assembling, installing, and replacing signs, sign components, and signposts.

  • Design and set up traffic control for all operations according to MUTCD standards, including manual flagging and detour management.

  • Maintain equipment for snow and ice removal during winter conditions and perform minor repairs on equipment and hand tools.

  • Lead and train others in HMW3's absence, including planning work activities, assigning tasks, and providing equipment instruction and training.

Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • High school graduation or GED.

  • Two (2) years of highway maintenance, logging, farming, excavation, or heavy equipment experience.

OR

  • One (1) year of experience as a Highway Maintenance Worker 1 or equivalent.

AND

  • Valid Washington State CDL Class A driver's license with endorsement "N" and without air brake restriction, with a valid medical card.

In addition to the following:

  • Ability to work weekends, holidays, alternate shifts, and more than 40 hours per week as needed. Must report to a duty station within 60 minutes of the after-hours call and respond to emergencies in all weather conditions, 24/7.

  • Ability to work long hours outdoors in various weather conditions, day or night, navigating rough terrain, and working at heights above 25 ft. over water or land. One must also be able to manipulate up to 50 lbs. safely. The work may expose one to hazardous materials and conditions, such as sharp objects and bloodborne pathogens. The work environment may also include hot temperatures and exposure to hot asphalt up to 350 degrees.

  • Ability to operate heavy equipment and hand and power tools.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have the following:

  • Washington State Traffic Control/Flagging Card

  • Washington State Pesticide Applicator's License

  • Backflow Prevention Tester Certification

  • Crane Certificate

Important Notes

  • This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.

  • The salary listed includes the legislatively approved 10% Group C premium for HMW2 positions located in Auburn, WA, King County.

  • The salary listed includes the legislative-approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County.

  •  In addition to the salary range listed, a general wage increase of 3% will be applied for all state employees on July 1, 2024.

  • The work schedule for this position is typically four 10-hour shifts from Tuesday to Friday.

  • This position is not eligible for remote work.

  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements.
