Job Responsibilities

25%

1.Operates CDL Class A licensed vehicles.

  • Operates maintenance trucks, pavement marking equipment, tractors, mowing machines, snowplows, salt spreaders, and other equipment including compressors, generators, post diggers, bucket trucks and other related equipment used in the construction of signs and barricades.

  • Washes, greases and conducts minor repairs and preventive maintenance activities of these vehicles and equipment.

2.Performs labor relating to maintenance of traffic signals, equipment and luminaries.

  • Erects and maintains all types of traffic control signs and delineators including straightening, removing and replacing said signs and/or posts along state highways.

  • Repairs specialized pavement marking and other traffic related equipment.

  • Performs labor relating to unique projects such as pavement marking removal, special pavement marking and curb reflector installation.

  • Responds to emergency weather situations, as instructed verbally or in writing, to inspect roadways and remove hazardous material/obstacles, some weighing up to 50 pounds, from roadways and drainage areas. Responds to emergency situations to inspect roadways, repair signals, protect traffic and assist in emergency response.

  • Occasionally acts as a crew leader

3.During snow and ice conditions, assists in snow and ice control.

  • Operates snowplows, spreads salt and sand.

  • Plows and removes snow.

4.Directs and controls traffic during roadside construction or repairs and sets up lane closures.

  • Works on cone pickup/laydown crew.

  • Paints curbs and works as a crew member on hand pavement marking crews.

  • Serves as a backup truck operator for pavement marking and sign hanging crews.

  • Operates all mechanical tools and utilities hand tools required for the erection and maintenance of signs.

5.Performs routine housekeeping duties at headquarters.

  • Cleans, maintains stockpile of materials.

  • Performs other tasks associated with the general care of headquarters.

  • Removes and disposes of trash, dead animals and other debris along highways

7.Mows grass, removes weeds and brush, loads and unloads vehicles and cleans traffic control signs.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Minimum Requirements

1.Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of four years of high school.

2.Requires possession of a Class "A" CDL with appropriate endorsements, to include X or N and no airbrake restrictions.

3.For seasonal employees only, possession of a Class B CDL with appropriate endorsements, to include X or N and no airbrake restrictions, is acceptable for a period of two years. At the beginning of the third year from the initial hire date, a seasonal employee must possess a Class A CDL.

Conditions of Employment

2.Requires one year driving experience immediately preceding appointment free of incidents which could result in license suspension or revocation.

3.Requires successful completion of a pre-employment background investigation, a pre-employment physical examination, a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening as well as on-going random drug and alcohol screenings.

4.Requires the ability to perform arduous labor outdoors in a variety of adverse conditions including, but not limited to, hot, cold, wet, windy, muddy, confined spaces, active construction sites, climbing steep terrain, roadways open to traffic and wading in water while dealing with adverse environmental conditions such as poisonous plants, animals, insects, rodents and snakes.

5.Requires the ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions while maintaining productive working relationships.

6.This position is considered medium work as defined by the US Dept. of Labor (20 CFR

404.1567(c)). Medium work involves lifting no more than 50 pounds at a time with frequent lifting or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds.

7.Operations employees are subject to call at any hour of the day or night on any day of the year in order to respond to emergencies outside of normal work hours. As a result, negotiated rate employees are required to work reasonable amounts of overtime when necessary. Any bargaining unit employee who may be required to engage in a call out shall respond to the call as quickly as practicable but in no situation can the response time exceed 45 minutes.

The Illinois Department of Transportation seeks to hire a Highway Maintainer to perform a variety of maintenance and traffic tasks related to performing maintenance, manufacture and assembly of traffic control devices on state-maintained highways in District 5.
