Responsibilities / Duties / Functions / Tasks

Essential functions of the job may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Plan, prepare and deliver lesson plans and instructional materials that facilitate active learning.

  • Develops schemes of work, lesson plans and tests that are in accordance with established procedures.

  • Instruct and monitor students in the use of learning materials and equipment.

  • Use relevant technology to support and differentiate instruction.

  • Manage student behavior in the classroom by establishing and enforcing rules and procedures.

  • Maintain discipline in accordance with the rules and disciplinary systems of the school.

  • Provide appropriate feedback on work.

  • Encourage and monitor the progress of individual students and use information to adjust teaching strategies.

  • Maintain accurate and complete records of students progress and development.

  • Update all necessary records accurately and completely as required by laws, and school policies and regulations.

  • Prepare required reports on students and activities.

  • Participate in department, school and parent meetings.

  • Communicate necessary information regularly to students, colleagues and parents regarding student progress and student needs.

  • Establish and communicate clear objectives for all learning activities

  • Prepare classroom for class activities.

  • Provide a variety of learning materials and resources for use in educational activities.

  • Observe and evaluate students performance and development.

  • Assign and grade class work, homework, tests and assignments.

Other functions of the job include but are not limited to the following:

  • Demonstrate preparation and skill in working with students from diverse cultural, economic and ability backgrounds.

  • Encourage parent and community involvement, obtain information for parents when requested, promptly return phone call and answer emails.

  • Participate in appropriate professional activities.

  • Participate in extracurricular activities such as social activities, sporting activities, clubs and student organizations as directed.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge Skills and Ability Required:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • B.A./B.S. degree in teaching from an accredited institution or related field teaching

  • California State certification in teaching in appropriate subject area.

  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.

  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

  • Must have the ability and proven ability to report to work on a regular and punctual basis.

  • Perform all other related work delegated or required to accomplish the objectives of the school program.

  • Knowledge and implementation of relevant technology.

  • Meet professional teacher education requirements of the school.

Physical Qualifications for Teacher:

  • When performing activities throughout the day related to the educating of students, the teacher spends the majority of the day standing in the classroom. While standing the teacher will frequently hold light objects they are working with and demonstrating, etc. These can be held from waist level to slightly above the teachers head. He or she must walk through the classroom and be able to maneuver in tight spaces between desks, etc. Dealing with the students can entail kneeling or squatting, stooping, and bending from 50-70 degrees at the waist on an occasional to frequent basis on a given day. The white board is used which can require grasping the marker or eraser, reaching at, below, or above shoulder height with the dominant upper extremity, reaching to the full arm extension above the head and may require trunk or neck rotation to look back at the class.

  • The teacher may pick up their classes several times each day from the parking lot and playground area. Likewise, they are required to walk their classes to various places around campus and on outings and field trips. This involves walking on even and uneven surfaces including gravel, blacktop, dirt, tile as well as stairs, bus steps and negotiating at least a 6-inch curb.

  • The teacher may use computers, projectors, TV/monitor, etc. It requires a 10-15 pound force to push or pull the AV stand; the handles are at a height of 42 inches. It is also necessary to forward bend, squat, kneel, etc. when working with equipment, plugging it in, etc.

  • The teacher often moves students desks and chairs to change the layout of the classroom to influence the learning situation. It is occasionally necessary to lift and carry boxes weighing up to 25 pounds from the office to classrooms. Carrying can be up to 200 feet and varies.

  • The teacher must sit on an occasional basis when developing lesson plans, grading, etc. This is done at the desk with forward bending from the waist, leaning on forearms, and looking down requires neck flexion. It is necessary to grasp and manipulate pens, markers, scissors, staplers, etc., occasionally or frequently, depending on the day. Grading papers is also necessary task for teachers both in class and at home. This may require a substantial amount of time sitting, writing using and bending the back, neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists and fingers.

  • The teacher must be able to hang posters and work on bulletin boards that require the teacher to stand and apply force to attach material to the wall or board.

  • The teacher must be able to reach, lift, retrieve, and replace various items needed in the classroom and teachers workroom such as books, paper, art supplies, curriculum items, audio vision equipment, storage containers and the like. The upper cupboard door locks are at approximately 64 and the upper shelves are at an approximate height of 86. These items may weigh from 5-30 pounds. A step ladder may need to be used.

  • In the teachers workroom, teachers will need to be able to use a large paper cutter, die cut machine and laminator which requires leaning and applying pressure of 101 pound force.

  • In an emergency, the teacher must be able to perform other physical activities as needed, when needed, which may include administering First Aid, CPR and/or using an AED.

  • Teachers and classroom instructional aides may be called upon to assist and/or supervise P.E., recess duty, athletic events, assemblies or extra-curricular activities as needed in the process of the school year. These duties may include walking at varying speeds, bending, kneeling, squatting, throwing, catching and such.
