Job Goal:

The principal is responsible for the operation of the total program with particular emphasis on the development of the total educational program for pupils and the improvement of instruction in his/her school to accomplish the District educational goals as established by the Board of Education.The principal is responsible for the development of the total educational program for students and the improvement of instruction in his/her school to accomplish the district educational goals as established by the Board of Education.

Qualifications:

Education:

  • Master's degree from an accredited college/university required.

License/Certification:

  • New Jersey DOE Administrative Certificate - 0200: Principal required

  • Successful completion of required criminal history review background check and sexual misconduct/child abuse disclosure process

  • Proof of US citizenship or legal resident alien status

Experience/Background:

  • Previous experience as a building/district administrator required; high school experience preferred.

A. Insures the effective operation of the school.

B. BInsures that the program of instruction is carried out effectively.

C. Strives to develop the Activity and Athletic Program.

D. Works to provide a strong program of Pupil Personnel Services.

E. Ensures the development of a sound relationship between the school and community.

F. Allocates resources to effectively support the school's programs.

G. Makes provision for proper care and use of the building and grounds.

H. Ensures a positive school climate for pupils.

I. Provides leadership for the professional staff to ensure strong performance.

J. Works cooperatively with District and other personnel.

K. Works to improve personal capabilities

L. Develops and maintains written educational goals for his/her school consistent with adopted district goals.

M. Ensures that all aspects of curriculum and building operation comply with state laws and regulations, Board contracts and policies, and district rules.

N. Ensures implementation of the current curriculum and instruction program for the school including the co-curricular programs.

O. Strives to increase the efficient use of district resources in the daily operation of the school.

P. Assigns staff within the school to achieve the maximum benefit towards the attainment of their assigned tasks.

Q. Evaluates the progress of the school staff, professional and non-professional staff toward the attainment of their assigned tasks and recommends necessary changes.

R. Analyzes the results of the instructional program development in his/her school and recommends necessary changes.

S. Works cooperatively with parents, community groups, appropriate legal and quasi legal agencies concerned with the program of the school.

T. Develops personal capabilities as well as those of administrative and supervisory staff in personnel, facility, curricular, and instructional management.

U. Works cooperatively with the administrative staff of the district.

JOB TASK A: Ensures the effective operation of the school.

  • Enforces policies, regulations and procedures.

  • Provides for and supervises the efficient operation of school.

  • Conducts special faculty meetings to disseminate information necessary for the operation of the school.

  • Conducts meetings of supervisors and staff members as needed.

  • Completes all reports, state and local in a timely and accurate manner.

  • Enforces all regulations related to safety, health, and fire

  • codes.

  • Involves teachers, supervisors, and Assistant Principals in decision-making as appropriate.

  • Recommends changes/additions/deletions to policies, regulations and procedures as appropriate.

  • Conducts regular faculty meetings according to a published schedule to provide a regular forum for information exchange.

JOB TASK B: Ensures that the program of instruction is carried out effectively.

  • Supervises and evaluates the performance of subject area supervisors.

  • Assures compliance with local and state policies, laws, administrative codes, procedures; and regulations regarding the academic program

  • Ensures the proper implementation of the curriculum.

  • Assigns staff to programs and classes based upon qualifications and ability.

  • Participates in and makes recommendations concerning curriculum revision in conjunction with school and district personnel.

  • Conducts formal observations of members of the faculty.

JOB TASK C: Ensures the proper operation of the Activity and Athletic Program

  • Supervises and evaluates the performance of the Supervisor of Athletics.

  • Supervises and evaluates the performance of supervisors and administrators in the operation of the Activity Program.

  • Actively recruits coaches and activity advisors and makes recommendations for their employment.

  • Assures compliance of the Athletic Program with N.J.S.I.A.A., C.A.L., and local regulations.

  • Previews publications for suitability.

  • Ensures that coaches and advisors comply with Regulations and Policies outlined in the Coaches, Activity Advisors and Financial Handbooks.

  • Participates in and/or attends school-related activities.

JOB TASK D: Works to provide a strong program of Pupil Personnel Services.

  • Supervises and evaluates the performance of the Guidance Supervisor.

  • Supervises school personnel in the proper maintenance of pupil records.

  • Ensures that the School Master Schedule is designed to maximize student access to courses while making most effective and efficient use of certified staff assets.

  • Ensures that the Guidance Program operates to assist pupils in reaching their full potential.

  • Ensures that college and employment needs of pupils are met.

  • Coordinates the activities of the Adolescent Study Team with other school personnel and department through the team chairperson and District Director of Handicapped Education.

JOB TASK E: Assists in the development of sound relationships between the school and the community.

  • Organized an active Community Awareness Committee.

  • Responds to concerns and grievances of parents and pupils in an appropriate and timely manner.

  • Confers with law enforcement and social agencies as needed.

  • Maintains an atmosphere of welcome and congeniality for parents and other visitors in the school.

  • Attends Board of Education meetings.

  • Represents the school in the community.

  • Communicates with parents and the community through newsletters, news releases and other means.

  • Provides programs about matters of special interest to parents.

JOB TASK F: Allocates resources to effectively support the school's programs.

  • Monitors the appropriate and efficient use of supplies, equipment, and other resources to support school programs.

  • Supervises and directs the Supervisors in the preparation, submission, and execution of budgetary forms and procedures.

  • Conveys school needs to the District Administration in an effective manner.

  • Monitors the use of special requisitions.

  • Works to insure the accuracy and timely preparation of budget requests and procedures.

  • Evaluates and approves special requisitions submitted to insure the efficient expenditure of available funds during the school year.

JOB TASK G: Makes provision for proper care and use of the facilities.

  • Surveys the building daily for cleanliness and orderliness.

  • Submits work orders in a timely manner through proper channels to assure correction of problems.

  • Coordinates the effective use of school facilities by internal and external groups.

JOB TASK H: Works to create a positive climate or pupils.

  • Ensures that the student attendance regulations and attendance procedure operate effectively.

  • Is responsible for and supervises the maintenance of propre student conduct.

  • Makes provision for the effective conduct of assemblies, TV presentations and other programs.

  • Ensuring that graduation activities are carried out in an organized fashion.

  • Provides opportunities for positive social interaction among pupils.

  • Initiates and supervises efforts to develop positive relationships among pupils and groups of pupils.

  • Maintains a safe and orderly school environment.

  • Supervises the implementation and execution of the appropriate safety programs in the school.

JOB TASK I: Provides leadership for the professional staff to ensure strong performance.

  • Participates in the recruiting, interviewing and selecting of faculty members and makes appropriate recommendations to the Superintendent.

  • Ensures that supervisors use the observation/evaluation process to improve performance of the faculty.

  • Administers the negotiated labor contract effectively.

  • Provides orientation for new staff.

  • Conduct Liaison Meeting with school staff members.

  • Uses a faculty handbook and memoranda to inform faculty about proper school operations.

  • Delegates duties and responsibilities effectively to Vice Principals, Supervisors and other staff members.

  • Organizes and supervises the work of the secretarial/clerical staff for efficient operations.

  • Encourages the participation of faculty members in activities designed for their growth and development.

  • Participates in the development of in-service activities for the school and district and evaluates and makes recommendations regarding proposals for these actions.

  • Attends workshops, meetings, etc. regarding school matters.

  • Corresponds and speaks effectively regarding school matters.

  • Is knowledgeable about current developments related to secondary school curriculum and administration.

  • Implements the previous year's professional improvement plan.

  • Is knowledgeable about District and school policies, regulations, and procedures.

  • Provides opportunities for the professional growth of Vice Principals, Supervisors, and other faculty members.

  • Participates actively in meetings and presents opinions and recommendations for the improvement of the operation of the school and district.

  • Works to effectively and efficiently support district programs, both academic and administrative, to aid in the effective operation of the District, and provide school level support of Board decisions, priorities and initiatives.

  • Participates in school implementation of the "Thorough and Efficient" process.

JOB TASK B: Ensure that all aspects of curriculum and building operation comply with state laws and regulations, Board contracts and policies, and district goals.

  • Submits applications to the Division of Curriculum and Instruction of the Office of Secondary Education for approval of proposed changes in the school program.

  • Completes reports as requested from Principals by the State Department of Education.

  • Implements safety and health procedures regarding activities and equipment.

  • Responsible for the daily management of building and staff.

  • Develops and implements necessary procedures for fire drills and civil defense exercises.

  • Responsible for compliance with regulations and rules for secondary schools as set for by the State Department of Education and the Board of Education.

  • Makes recommendations for operational maintenance as necessary.

JOB TASK C: Ensure implementation of the current curriculum and instruction program for the school including the co-curricular programs.

  • Assures proper conduct and decorum of the student body and its participation in all activities.

  • Responsible for programming and publishing student schedules.

  • Supervises and evaluates the performance of all personnel.

  • Develops inservice training for teachers, etc.

  • Assists in recruiting, selecting, and training of staff.

  • Conducts faculty meetings as necessary for the functioning of the school.

  • Conducts meetings with department supervisors and/or other professionals as necessary for the proper functioning of the school.

  • Supervises the orientation of new staff.

  • Develops in cooperation with others the Master Teaching Schedule and special assignments and student schedules.

  • Involves teachers in decision-making processes where appropriate.

  • Ues Guidance, Special Services, and other support staff members as appropriate.

JOB TASK D: Strive to increase the efficient use of district resources in the daily operation of the school.

  • Prepares annual budget request for the school.

  • Provides for general plant utilization and scheduling of its various facilities.

  • Coordinates with all personnel in the most efficient and effective use of all facilities.

  • Assures the proper maintenance of student records.

  • Maintains effective and continuing public relations with parents, schools, and all other community resources.

  • Approves or disapproves requisitions and processes in a timely fashion.

JOB TASK E: Assign staff within the school to achieve the maximum benefit towards the attainment of their assigned tasks.

  • Screens candidates for vacancies with the professional staff.

  • Assigns the best qualified staff for the programs, course taught, and activities supervised to ensure greatest student success.

JOB TASK F: Evaluate the progress of the school, staff, professional and non-professional staff toward the attainment of their assigned tasks and recommend necessary changes.

  • Evaluates and recommends annually to the Superintendentthe program of studies and course offerings for the ensuring academic year.

  • Supervises staff evaluations and makes recommendations to the Superintendent.

  • Develops and supervises the school's student activity program.

JOB TASK G: Analyze the results of the instructional program development in his/her school and recommend necessary changes.

  • Supervises the general program of the instruction, coordinating through department supervisors and specific phases of the instructional program.

  • Determines staff needs and makes appropriate recommendations.

JOB TASK H: Work cooperatively with parents, community groups, appropriate legal and quasi legal agencies concerned with the program of the school.

  • Holds periodical conferences with local law enforcement officials.

  • Serves as liaison between school and social agencies.

  • Communicates with all parents in regard to all necessary school matters.

  • Consult with parent organizations, councils, and related groups.

JOB TASK I: Develop personal capabilities as well as those of administrative and supervisory staff in personnel, facility, curricular, and instructional management.

  • Encourages attendance and involvement with workshops, inservice programs, graduate courses, and other professional enrichment opportunities by staff.

  • Makes an effort to implement the previous year's improvement plan.

JOB TASK J: Work cooperatively with the administrative staff of the district.

  • Works with the Superintendent and his assistant in a shared role in the professional leadership for a continuous program of curriculum development.

  • Works closely with the appointed public relations officer in all matters pertaining to the high school.

  • Works closely with all administrative and supportive staff in all matters pertaining to the high school.

Evaluation:

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board of Education policies on evaluation of tenured and non-tenured professional personnel and pertinent laws.
