Guidance Counselor Job Responsibilities
Performance Responsibilities:
● Assist in the planning and presentation of school curriculum programs regarding
scheduling and graduation requirements, and high school grade-level presentations.
● Lead the administration of all standardized tests (ASVAB, PSAT, school day SAT) and
interpret results to parents and students.
● Assist in the planning and coordination of career programs, college visitations, and
student and parent orientation/information sessions.
● Work with Department Chairs as to the needs of students and recommend changes in
curriculum, programs, or activities as needed for graduation requirements.
● Provide guidance to each student that leads to increased personal growth, self-
understanding, and maturity.
● Take an active role in interpreting the district's objectives and goals to students and
parents.
● Maintain student records and protect the confidentiality of records.
● Transcribe grades from transcripts of incoming students.
● Assist students with the college application process, write letters of recommendation,
and assist in applying for scholarships.
● Assist students in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities through interpretation of
individual standardized test scores.
● Assist students in developing educational and occupational plans.
● Assist students in selecting Graduation Pathways.
● Promote the educational success of struggling students.
● Enrollment of new students.
● Scheduling of classes for assigned students.
● As appropriate, make referrals for mental health counseling services.
● Perform other job related duties pertaining to the positive, efficient, and effective
operation of the Guidance Department as assigned by building level administrators.

Nurture positive relationships with students, parent, and staff members.
Demonstrate respect for peers, subordinates, and building and district administration.
Demonstrate the ability to work with sensitive issues in a tactful and professional manner.
Address concerns and offer suggestions in an appropriate and confidential manner.
Demonstrate a thorough understanding of current DOE guidance initiatives and policies
pertaining to guidance.
