Location: Coconino High School

SUMMARY OF FUNCTION: Demonstrate the competencies and behaviors needed to improve student preparedness and mastery and to support the core values, vision, and mission of the Flagstaff Unified School District.

Certification: Arizona Department of Public Safety, IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card; valid Arizona Department of Education School Counselor, PreK-12 certificate.

Flagstaff Unified Schools is seeking excellent candidates for the High School Counselor position at Coconino High School. Applicants must be appropriately certified.

Candidates must complete an on-line application which requires appropriate Arizona certification, valid Arizona fingerprint clearance card, three letters of recommendation, and transcript of credits.

OVERVIEW:

The position of school counselor prepares all students for success through direct and indirect student services. The position is responsible for leadership, advocacy, and collaboration within the school to implement a preventative, proactive school counseling program, which adheres to the ethical and professional standards as outlined by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model (2012). The position will promote student success which addresses academic, career and social-emotional needs of students.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Arizona Department of Education School Counselor, PreK-12 certificate required.

  • Valid fingerprint clearance card from the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

  • Master's Degree in School Guidance and Counseling.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Adheres to the American School Counselor Association Ethical Standards for School Counselors

  • Experience in the use of technology in research, school counseling program development, management, and delivery.

  • Prior experience as a school counselor.

  • Experience in college and career readiness work including the knowledge of academic, social emotional, and college and career development.

  • Experience with use of technology in research, school counseling program development, management, and delivery.

  • Actively involved in the school community.

  • One - three years' experience as a teacher or knowledge and implementation of classroom management skills and lesson delivery.

  • Ability to work with diverse populations and cultures

  • Willingness to adapt to change.

  • Continued professional development could include: ASCA National Model, Differentiated Instruction, Understanding by Design, Response to Intervention, Positive Behavior Intervention Support, and other state-wide initiatives

  • Adherence to the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) standards for school counselors.

  • Ability to effectively communicate (verbal and written) with parents and district personnel at all levels.

  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative and effective professional relationships with teachers, administrators, parents, students.

  • Ability to work with diverse populations and cultures.

  • Knowledge of college and career readiness strategies and programs.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and Manage a comprehensive school counseling program based on the ASCA National Model: A Framework for School Counseling Programs

  • Maintain accountability within a comprehensive school counseling program based on the ASCA National Model: A Framework for School Counseling Programs, including collaboration with the administration and faculty members to regularly make data-informed, evidence-based, counseling decisions.

  • Spend 80% or more of documented time on direct and indirect services to students. Direct services to students typically include: instruction of core curriculum, Education Career Action Plan (ECAPS) lessons, academic planning, responsive services in individual or small group settings, and crisis response support. Indirect services to students typically include: consultation with parents, teachers, educators, and community organizations; collaboration with educators, parents, and the community in regards to student achievement; and referrals for students and families to school or community resources.

  • Create student schedules on a quarterly basis.

  • Complete schedule changes for students as appropriate

  • Schedule and facilitate Student Success Team meetings; send out invitations to staff and identified family members, complete appropriate documentation to monitor and record progress.

  • Organize and facilitate parent and school events related to academic, college and career planning (ex: College Application Day, FAFSA events, recognition nights, parent information nights)

  • Monitor academic (grades and attendance) records to ensure students' progress towards graduation.

  • Act as Program Coordinator to Support 504 referral, evaluation, and accommodation processes for students.

  • Assist students in crisis situations and refer to district or community resources when appropriate.

  • Participates as a member on the District Crisis Team as needed.

  • Participates on team for Suicide and Risk Assessments as needed.

  • Support Special Education team on a case by case basis when needed, including attendance at relevant IEP meetings and collaborating to write counseling goals and progress monitor those goals (Tier 3).

  • Supports the school's existing Tier 1 behavioral program.

  • Addressing teacher referrals for behaviors to then provide Tier 2 supports to students.

  • Act as community liaison with outside behavioral health agencies to address individual and or/family support related to social emotional needs.

  • Monitors social emotional progress when it impacts academic progress in alignment with state and district standards.

  • Participation on the School Implementation team for Restorative Practices.

  • Assists student/family transition to the next educational experience.

Maintains student records and protects their confidentiality through complying with FERPA guidelines.
