JOB TITLE: High School Band Teacher - Magna Vista High School

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: High School Principal

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Administer the instrumental music program for grades 9-12. Direct and instruct high school marching and symphonic bands. This is an active program with high enrollment/student interest and strong tradition of community support. Under direction of the school principal, plan and provide for appropriate learning experiences for students. Provide an atmosphere and environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development of individuals to ensure success for every student. Supervise students in a variety of school related settings. Monitor and evaluate student outcomes. Communicate and interact with students, parents, staff and community. Develop, select and modify instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students. Maintain appropriate records and follows required procedures and practices. Monitor appropriate use and care of equipment, materials and facilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Instructs students by lecturing, demonstrating, and using audiovisual aids and other materials to supplement presentations.

  • Prepares course objectives and outline for course of study following curriculum guidelines or requirements of state and school.

  • Assigns lessons and corrects homework.

  • Administers tests to evaluate pupil progress, record results, and issue reports to inform parents of progress.

  • Keep attendance records.

  • Maintain discipline in classroom.

  • Meets with parents to discuss student progress and problems.

  • Participates in faculty and professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops.

  • Performs related duties such as sponsoring one or more activities or student organizations, assisting pupils in selecting course of study, and counseling student in adjustment and academic problems.

  • Complies with school and school board policies and regulations.

  • Demonstrates professional growth.

  • Prompt and accurate with required records and reports.

  • Uses instructional and planning time effectively.

  • Assumes responsibility for care of materials, equipment, and facilities.

  • Assumes responsibility for a neat, safe environment for students committed to his/her care.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of the subject being taught.

  • Uses out-of-class assignments, when appropriate, to support the instructional objectives.

  • Performs related tasks as required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's Degree in applicable field of education from an accredited college or university. Must have or be eligible to receive a Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in Music Education-Instrumental PreK-12 from the Virginia Department of Education.

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK: Performs difficult professional work providing teaching services in a specialized subject or assigned group of subjects, motivating students to develop skill in assigned subject matters; does related work as required. Work is performed under the regular supervision of the school principal. This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects, and some light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Work requires stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, and repetitive motions. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities. The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS: Teaching specialized subject matter(s), motivating students to achieve maximum potential. Develops lesson plans and instructional materials. Translates lesson plans into learning experiences. Integrates subject area content and technology. Maintains professional competence through inservice education and self-selected professional books and instructional materials. Selects and requisitions books and instructional materials. Participates in curriculum development programs, faculty committees and student activity sponsorship as required. Performs related tasks as required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of subject(s) taught; thorough knowledge of secondary education principles, practices and procedures; thorough knowledge of the principles and methodology of effective teaching; thorough knowledge of school division rules, regulations and procedures; ability to establish and maintain standards of behavior; ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and written reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff, students and parents; ability to operate a personal computer. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in an acceptable field.
