The High School Art Teacher teaches grades 9-12 general art classes and reports directly to the Principal of the School and works with the K-12 Visual and Performing Arts Curriculum Coordinator. The Art Teacher is expected to work closely with all staff members while providing a safe, equitable, culturally responsive learning environment with high expectations for all students in the classroom.
The High School Art Teacher must have strong knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite software which includes illustrator, photoshop and premiere pro. They must also have strong skills in three dimensional art. The candidate must possess skills
is also responsible for developing in each student an interest in art and the ability for creative expression in visual terms. This person must use skills and techniques of artistic expression to develop aesthetic understandings and appreciations of the arts and to discover and develop talents of students in the field of art.
Role & Responsibilities: The teacher will:
Provide opportunities for students to work and share collaboratively and to develop a strong sense of respect for self and others, while helping young students appreciate art and develop their own artistic expressions.
Create a welcoming, inclusive, culturally responsive classroom environment that is conducive to student learning and their ability to comfortably share their authentic selves.
Participate in the arts curriculum review and design, and work cooperatively with a team to develop a strong school program incorporating both state and district frameworks.
Collaborate and integrate with faculty across disciplines to build meaningful curricular connections.
Provide individual and small-group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students with varying intellectual and artistic abilities, and to accommodate a variety of instructional activities.
Evaluate each student's performance and growth in knowledge and aesthetic understandings.
Plan and present art displays and exhibitions designed to exhibit students' work for the school and the community.
Communicate with parents and school counselors on pupil progress.
Use successful, research-based instructional strategies, including differentiated instruction for diverse learners.
Regularly assess student abilities in order to design and implement strategies to enhance student learning.
Work with small groups of struggling learners, while modifying and differentiating instruction.
Align Content and instruction to the Massachusetts Arts Curriculum Frameworks and to district scope and sequences.
Monitor student progress and adjust instruction accordingly. Provide progress reports as required.
Participate in ongoing professional development activities within district and out-of-district.
Abide by state statutes, school board policies, district handbook, and regulations.
Remain current by participating in ongoing professional development activities within and out-of-district, such as instructional technology.
All other duties assigned by the Principal or WPS Administration.
Qualifications & Skill Set:
Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts from an accredited college or university required; Master's degree preferred.
Required Licensure: Current Massachusetts's DESE Certification in High School Art for corresponding grade levels.
Capability to instruct 2D and 3D art, ceramics, photography and computer graphic courses.
Must be highly innovative and creative in approach and prioritize process over product the creation of truly integrated curricular experiences.
Experience working in a diverse educational setting, including the ability to work successfully with students, colleagues, and families from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds.
Terms of Employment: As outlined in the Agreement Between The Woburn Teachers' Association and The Woburn School Committee.
