Van Andel Institute is currently seeking a Full-Time High Performance Computing Specialist in Information Technology. The goal of this position will be to support the usage of Linux-based systems and applications by researchers and scientists. This individual will work with various teams to design and support software, systems, and tools for their needs.

As a High Performance Computing Specialist you will:

  • Interact with faculty, scientists, technicians, and students on computational needs to optimize compute and storage usage in a High Performance Computing (HPC) Environment.

  • Develop and maintain strategic relationships with research departments to raise awareness around the research computing services provided and help researchers make best use of HPC/scientific computing resources.

  • Provide expert technical support to researchers, faculty, and students in utilizing HPC resources effectively for research projects.

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary research teams on projects that require HPC resources and effective data management.

  • Assist in data management planning and best practices for research projects and work with researchers to develop data management plans, ensuring proper data organization and documentation.

  • Conduct training sessions and workshops on HPC best practices, parallel computing, and research data management.

  • Attend conferences and workshops relevant to HPC, advance skills, and stay current with emerging HPC technologies and trends; develop and maintain external contacts at institutions having similar HPC requirements and solutions.

  • Coach and provide advice, guidance, encouragement, constructive feedback and transfer knowledge to less experienced team members at the Institute.

  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

What Qualifications are required for this role?

  • BS in Computer Science, Computational Science, Bioinformatics, or closely related field.

  • Experience or background in using computational technology in a science related field and customer focused.

  • Strong understanding of HPC usage, Linux, Python, workflows, and job scheduling.

  • Demonstrated customer support experience, writing system documentation, and training end users.

  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.

  • Demonstrated success working collaboratively within teams and across organizations.
