As one of the most innovative companies in the world, FMC is looking for a Scientist in the Herbicide Discovery Biology group at our Stine research facility in Newark, Delaware. The mission of the Herbicide Discovery group is to discover new herbicide active ingredients qualified for commercial development. Research Investigator identifies, assesses and develops new scientific concepts and/or technologies to provide solutions to identified problems. He/she manages technical projects, coordinating with other professionals across varying disciplines and support personnel to accomplish objectives. He/she defines scientific approach to problems, develops hypotheses, tests them to lead projects to logical conclusions.

Responsibilities

The Research Investigator provides strong biological technical results and leadership to Herbicide Discovery process. The Herbicide Discovery Research Investigator generates extensive biological results through a series of tiered screens and special tests, interprets and reports the results and works closely with synthesis chemists, biochemists and environmental scientists in a team environment to optimize lead area chemistry. Development, validation and implementation of new screens also complements these activities.

The successful Research Investigator should have a good understanding of current and evolving weed control practices in multiple market regions and crops and will apply this knowledge to the assessment of new herbicide active ingredients. The Research Investigator will generate greenhouse and field biological results and integrate this information with mode of action, environmental fate, crop and weed metabolism and other topics generated by others on the team to discover superior new product candidates. The position calls for active networking with FMC regional field development specialists and marketing teams as well as strong interactions with the academic weed/crop science communities.

Required Education

Qualified candidates will have a Ph.D in a relevant scientific area such as Weed Science, Agronomy, or Plant Physiology with 4-5 years agronomic experience.

Qualifications

  • Experience in developing research programs which are technically demanding and effectively integrate critical technologies to apply new technologies broadly

  • Experience in operating in an unstructured environment and define novel research approaches to complex scientific or technical problem

  • Strict observance and adherence to required and approved safety procedures

  • Familiarity with organic chemistry nomenclature and physical properties, agrichemical site of action and/or soil science, as well as skills in data management, modeling, visualization and interpretation are strong positives.

  • Knowledge of practical weed control, herbicide resistance mechanisms, and agricultural experience is also highly desirable.

  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective networks to accomplish work

  • Experience in working as an individual and as an effective team player

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Experience in effectively supervising others

  • Experience in effectively mentoring other employees

The successful candidate will work independently and under the supervision of a Principal Investigator on projects related to the discovery, optimization and characterization of safe and sustainable new weed control technologies for Global agriculture. Responsibilities * Experimental test implementation involving bioassays to detect the effects of chemicals on crops and weeds including studies with numerous biological observations and test evaluations * Compound dilution, preparation, formulation and application of test solutions * Capability to independently design and implement tests to answer specific research questions * Plant bioassay propagation and preparation in collaboration with propagation specialist and Potting and Seeding group to cater to specific screen needs * Field, growth chamber and greenhouse plant production and propagation as necessary to support research efforts * Occasionally this research may require field applications using small plot technique. * Data collection, collation, analysis and generation of reports using various software tools. * Understanding of design of experiments and experience in statistical data analysis as needed for technical data summarization. * Ability to present summary technical results in both internal and external meeting formats. * Ability to troubleshoot impediments to successful test implementation and devise improvements in testing protocols. Required Education MS in Weed Science, Crop Science, Agronomy, Botany or related discipline with a working knowledge of biological and organic chemistry or equivalent experience and knowledge in such areas; BS with at least 10 years of research experience. Qualifications * In-Depth understanding of current weed problems in major crops, and characterization of herbicide resistance in weeds species. * Basic laboratory skills, including but not limited to analytical weighing, liquid transfer, sample preparation, serial dilution, treatment application, test evaluation and collection of data. * Strict observance and adherence to required and approved safety procedures. * Familiarity or experience in safely working with chemicals of unknown toxicological hazard. * Familiarity with and interest in conducting greenhouse, controlled environment chamber, and/or field trials with experimental chemicals. * Strong critical thinking capabilities * Excellent written and oral communication skills, including group presentations of experimental results. * Good computer skills with an understanding of MS Windows Operating System and typical MS Office suite applications as well as applications such as Outlook and other databases. * Strong interpersonal skills. * Willing to work in a group of diverse people while supporting team members to meet team objectives. * As appropriate, possess the ability to work independently.
