Job Summary

The Sickle Cell Program Nurse will work with the Sickle Cell Nurse Coordinator and the staff of the Division of Hematology to provide comprehensive health care for children with sickle cell disease and other hematologic disorders.

Job Responsibilities
1.Performs pre-clinic chart review weekly.

  • Review patient charts prior to clinic visit.

  • Generates laboratory request

  • Generates pre-clinic review form

  • Participates in pre-clinic meetings
    2.Coordinates care of sickle cell patients receiving hydroxyurea and simple transfusions.

  • Monitor laboratory values in collaboration with physician and nurse coordinator.

  • Communicates with patients/families receiving hydroxyurea and transfusions for assessment monthly.

  • Complete prior authorizations as needed.

  • Meet with transfusion patients in Day Hospital at each visit.

  • Ensure that families make next visit appointment before leaving the clinic area.

  • Coordinates transfusion schedule with transfusion nurse practitioner and maintain communication about patient needs, scheduling issues, etc.
    3.Telephone triage of hematology patients and documentation.
    4.In conjunction with sickle cell nurse coordinator and full time programs provides care to patients as needed, acts as a resource for other staff and provides coverage for the program's nursing needs.
    5.Provides patient/family education as needed.
    6.Other duties as deemed necessary.

Required Licenses, Certifications, Registrations

RN / Temp Practice Permit

BLS - Basic Life Support

Required Education and Experience

Required Education: Graduation from NLNAC and/or CCNE accredited school of nursing or college.

Required Experience: Three years pediatric experience required. Active membership in a professional nursing organization.

Preferred Education, Experience & Cert/Lic

Preferred Education: BSN

Additional Technical Requirements

Computer Competency

  • Basic use of a computer (mouse, keyboard, printer, USB ports).

  • Basic use of Microsoft Office (Word processing, spreadsheets, presentations and Skype).

  • Web browsing, intranet search, document access.

  • Use of shared network file space.

  • Basic use of patient facing technology. (e.g. IV pumps, point of care devices, CR monitors).

  • Navigation and use of clinical communication systems.

Information Literacy

  • Determines the nature and extent of clinical information needed and uses the appropriate technology to access it.

  • Accesses needed information effectively and efficiently.

  • Evaluates information and its sources critically and appropriately incorporates it into clinical practice.

  • Evaluates outcomes of the use of information.

Information Management Literacy

  • Navigation of the electronic health record system.

  • Ability to locate and review specific patient data in various clinical information systems.

  • Effectively uses clinical decision support tools.

  • Understands policies and procedures, confidentiality, security, and privacy regulations regarding the use of clinical information systems.

  • Ability to collect clinical data using quality improvement tools.
