The Heavy Truck Driver is a part of the Road and Bridge team. This team is responsible for construction and maintenance of roads and bridges in the county that are not part of the state highway system or with a municipality. The role performs skilled duties associated with the operation of trucks and repair, maintenance and construction of County roads, bridges and right-of-ways; operates heavy equipment incidental to the work.
• Inspects specialty vehicles and heavy equipment for proper operating condition; repairs and adjusts equipment and performs maintenance and preventive maintenance as needed.
Maintains and controls traffic at work site
Enforces rules and regulations according to DOT guidelines; reports unsafe acts, conditions, accidents and injuries
Occasional operation of motor graders, brooms, loaders, backhoes, skidsteers, tractors, mowers, dump trucks, or similar equipment.
Patch potholes, fill road washouts and clean storm drains. Install and clean culverts.
Meets with foreman for scheduling and assignments
Helps bridge crew when needed

Required:
1 year experience in operating a Class A vehicle
Current and valid Texas CDL-Class A license and a good driving record
Knowledge of the principles and practices, standards and methods of construction-related equipment operation
Working knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with the operation and maintenance of heavy-duty construction equipment
Ability to inspect equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with County employees and general public
Excellent organizational and time management skills, especially the ability to manage multiple concurrent tasks
Must be a self-starter and able to accomplish expected tasks under minimal supervision
Ability to perform skilled manual work; and to demonstrate sufficient strength, agility and dexterity in performing the duties of the position
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS: Works mostly outdoors. Exposed to extreme heat, cold, rain, humidity, wetness, hazardous chemicals, insects, dust, poisonous plants, unpleasant smells, fumes, traffic hazards, and physical stress from exertion. Some incumbents may have contact with buried electric, phone, or television cable lines. This position follows DOT guidelines.
PHYSICAL DEMAND REQUIREMENTS:
While performing the duties of this position, the incumbent is regularly required to stoop, bend, push and pull. May have to lift heavy boxes or objects up to 100 pounds. May be exposed to hazardous chemicals. Exposure to extreme heat and cold.
Ability to see and hear hazards associated with the operation of construction equipment.
Other physical efforts as required.
HOURS / SPECIAL CONDITIONS: This position may be required to work a flexible schedule based on the needs of the facility. The position schedule is 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday to Friday.
