This position is eligible for overtime (non-exempt), if applicable.

Pay Grade 523

This position is eligible for Hazardous Duty Supplemental Pay ($90/month or $0.52/hour) and CDL pay ($1.08/hour) upon hire.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The purpose of this classification to perform comprehensive maintenance and repairs on Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government's diverse fleet of heavy equipment, motor vehicles, and related systems.

The Heavy Equipment Technician Principal is responsible for maintaining and repairing the department's fleet, which includes fire engines, ladder trucks, rescue vehicles, and other emergency apparatus. They perform a wide range of tasks, including preventative maintenance like oil changes, brake inspections, and fluid checks, ensuring that all vehicles remain in optimal working condition. When issues arise, they conduct emergency repairs to keep the fleet operational for emergency responses. In addition to repairs, these positions perform regular inspections to ensure that vehicles comply with safety regulations and department standards. They use computerized diagnostic tools to troubleshoot and resolve complex mechanical and electrical issues. This role also involves recordkeeping and documenting all maintenance and repair work to ensure compliance with internal policies and regulatory requirements.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent

  • Six (6) years of related experience

  • Additional years of related education may substitute for years of experience

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Oversees shop operations, as required

  • Performs scheduled preventative maintenance as needed to maintain optimum performance

  • Performs safety inspections

  • Mentors and trains technicians in the Division

  • Diagnoses and repairs all performance deficiencies

  • Fabricates parts and components as needed to make repairs

  • Maintains records of work performed

  • Maintains inventory of parts and supplies

  • Performs related work as assigned

SPECIAL LICENSE/CERTIFICATION

  • Valid Kentucky Commercial Driver's License (CDL) - Class B

  • Must obtain Endorsement N - Tank Vehicles within the first six (6) months of employment

  • Seven (7) certifications from the list approved by Lexington Fire Department Fleet Maintenance Bureau, to include at least one (1) ASE Medium-Heavy Truck certificate (T1-T8) and at least one (1) Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) certificate
