This position is responsible for performing high-quality field service repair work on heavy equipment in order to respond to customer needs in a positive, caring and timely manner and to ensure maximum value for work performed.

Position Title:Service Technician III - Rental
Reports to: Branch Manager

Job Summary:
Performs maintenance and repairs complex mechanical, electrical,
hydraulic, and diesel systems on a variety of rental and customer equipment and tools
while using a high degree of independent judgment.
The incumbent in this position is expected to model the following practices on a
daily basis: 1) Demonstrate alignment with the company's mission and core
business values; 2) Collaborate with key internal/external resources;
3) Participate in ongoing self-development.
Essential Functions:
Troubleshoots and diagnoses equipment malfunctions and failures
Disassembles and assembles machine components to manufacturers
specifications through the use of hand tools, pneumatic tools, and any
specialized tooling
Rebuilds, repairs, reconditions, and maintains equipment and components
Maintains good customer relations and support; communicates customer needs
to shop management
Plans and controls cost of repair jobs
Completes parts orders and identifies parts for return
Maintains company equipment keeps in good, clean, and orderly condition
Works safely at all times and adheres to all applicable safety policies; complies
with all company policies, procedures, and standards
Works overtime as required by workload and customers needs
Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; e.g.,
ProTech Technician Training Paths
Performs other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of dirt engaging equipment, aerial, and lifting equipment
Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and
Quality control analysis skills- Conducting tests and inspections of products,

Education and Experience:
More than seven years of work-related skill, knowledge, or experience preferred
High school/equivalent diploma or trade school diploma preferred
Valid drivers license
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Occasional travel to customer site
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to move objects, and use abdominal and lower back muscles to
provide support over time without fatigue
Frequently moves materials or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds
Constant movement and use of limbs; this position requires good manual
dexterity, coordination, and stamina
Ascend/descend with gradual or continuous progress by oneself, using both
hands and feet and climb up and down ladders
Be able to safely maneuver and work underneath equipment
Routinely reacts to visual, auditory, and other signals, including alarms and
instructions, and is required to visually inspect work
Work Environment:
Regularly works indoors around moving mechanical parts and may be exposed to
weather extremes when working outside in conditions that include inclement
weather, heat, cold, and humidity
Noise level may be loud at times
Exposure to small quantities of chemicals, steam, high-pressure water, and high
speed rotating equipment
Significant time spent in confined spaces and high places

Job Description KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: * Knowledge of City ordinance pertaining to municipal solid waste collection and disposal services. * Knowledge of preventive maintenance procedures of assigned refuse/brush collection equipment. * Knowledge and ability to implement all applicable traffic laws and rules for vehicle and equipment operation. * Knowledge of local and regional traffic patterns and/or geography, road systems, and locations of major streets, landmarks, and buildings. * Knowledge of the work hazards, applicable safety precautions and city safety rules and regulations associated with assigned equipment. * Knowledge of and skill in operating various types of heavy equipment such as truck mounted knuckle-boom grapple loader, front loader, roll-off truck, rear loader, and other types of refuse collection vehicles. * Ability to operate levers or pedals and make fine, highly controlled muscular movements to adjust the position of control mechanisms. * Ability to work independently or as a team to complete daily activities according to work schedule. * Ability to make independent decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures. * Ability to maintain good planning and organizational skills. * Ability to take and follow directions from supervisor. * Ability to give directions to and gain compliance from assigned staff. * Ability to perform strenuous and routine work. * Ability to maintain a valid Texas Commercial Driver License and a good driving record. * Ability to maintain harmonious and effective working relationships with other employees and respond to general public complaints. * Ability to project a positive and professional image of the City of Laredo. * Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing in the English language and orally in the Spanish language. * Required to comply with all City of Laredo's policies and procedures. * Ability to maintain good health and physical condition sufficient to permit the full performance of the duties of the position. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed inside and/or outside a stockroom, or warehouse. Work may be exposed to a variety of weather conditions and outdoor elements, such as: excessive dampness, chill, heat, humidity, intermittent noise, and inclement cold weather. Work may be exposed to a variety of environmental conditions, such as: unknown & dangerous conditions, unusual environmental stress, contagious infectious disease, irritating chemicals, life-threatening situations, dry atmosphere, solvents, dirt, grease, oils, silica, asbestos, dust, constant noise, pneumatic vibration, fumes, smoke, gases, radiant/electrical energy, and slippery/uneven walking surfaces. Capable of working closely with others or alone, working long or irregular working hours, working shift work and/or weekends, working with protective devices, working on ladders or scaffolding, working around moving objects or vehicles, working around machines with moving parts and objects, working with hands in water, and traveling by heavy equipment 95% of the time, and by van 5% of the time. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES: * Carry out and complete assigned WebQa/311 work orders, picking up branches, bulky items and/or reports from within the department in the allotted time period. * Maintain constant vigilance of surrounding conditions such as citizens, equipment, property, overhead power lines/wires, etc. in order to assure that operations are conducted in a safe manner. * Manipulate and/or operate a truck mounted knuckle boom grapple loader and other equipment specific to associated division within the department to collect brush and /or bulky materials for disposal at the city landfill. Operate a front and rear loader to cover other routes when needed. * Conduct basic maintenance on equipment including but not limited to lubricating grease points, tightening loose hydraulic hoses, washing, brushing, and cleaning the truck's interior cabin to ensure a clean and professional image. * Respond appropriately to all emergencies and required to be on standby (on call waiting to be engaged to work) when necessary or as requested by management. * Trains/and or assist in the training of employees by relying on previous experience and capability to use the tools and equipment to achieve the objectives of the position, as requested by management. * Assists other personnel in the department whenever necessary in performing unskilled or semiskilled labor such as directing traffic, trimming trees and all other related duties as needed and/or requested by management. * Must follow all rules of telephone and/or hand held radio courtesy in all communications. * Will be required to drive a City vehicle for City business use. * Performs other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications At least five (5) years of experience as a heavy equipment operator (examples of heavy equipment are: backhoe, bulldozer, roll-off, grapple truck, front loader, rear loader, scraper, grader, automated refuse truck or trash compactor, etc.) or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Valid Licenses and Certifications Valid Texas Commercial Driver License (CDL) class A or B is required.* * If applicant holds an out-of-state license, a State of Texas Driver License must be obtained prior to employment. As part of the minimum requirements for all positions with the City of Laredo, a thorough background check and certified school transcripts will be required from all applicants who are offered employment.
