The City of Bend Fleet Department is currently accepting applications for one (1), limited term duration, full-time Heavy Equipment Service Technician position. This opportunity is represented by the City of Bend Employee Association (COBEA) and is FLSA non-exempt (overtime eligible).  The expected duration of this position is approximately one year.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Equipment Maintenance Supervisor, the Heavy Equipment Service Technician performs maintenance and routine repairs to City owned vehicles and heavy equipment, including street sweepers, graders, dump trucks, forklifts, and other similar heavy equipment. The City of Bend provides all the tools, and equipment necessary for tasks that will be assigned

Duties and Responsibilities

The individual in this position is expected to engage in the following work-related activities.

  • Determines, in accordance with directions received from the supervisor, priority for servicing equipment.

  • May be assigned to and responsible for performing tire changes, minor electrical repair, steam cleaning engines and undercarriages, lubrication, oil changing, wheel bearing packing and similar activities on all assigned automotive equipment.

  • Performs routine servicing, maintenance and minor repair of a specific class of heavy equipment such as street sweepers, graders, dump trucks, forklifts or similar equipment.

  • Evaluates, detects, and diagnoses minor mechanical problems on vehicles and equipment; implements required routine repairs, utilizing standard operating procedures.

  • Maintains and repairs light equipment, mowers, weed eaters, and/or other related items.

  • Assists equipment technicians in repair of automotive equipment and in making outside service calls;?does minor welding, machining and painting.

  • Maintains records of vehicle servicing data; ensures adequate service supplies are on hand.

  • Evaluates, detects, and diagnoses minor mechanical problems on vehicles and equipment; implements required routine repairs, utilizing standard operating procedures.

  • Complies with safety requirements of the position and actively promotes safe work practices.

  • Responds to system maintenance and or service calls outside scheduled work hours while on call or in the event of an emergency.

  • In an emergency event or an officially declared State of Emergency, responds as directed to ensure the restoration of essential public services, facilities, and infrastructure.

  • Performs related duties as necessary to achieve the objectives of the position.

Skill Profile

The individual in this position is expected to possess and exhibit the following knowledge, skills, and abilities.

  • Knowledge of applicable tools and equipment of the trade.

  • Knowledge of operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines.

  • Knowledge of less complex mechanical and electrical parts of automotive equipment.

  • Knowledge of diagnostic devices utilized in identifying vehicle and/or light equipment malfunctions.

  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.

Ability Requirements

The following capabilities are required to perform the essential functions of this position.

  • Positions in this class typically require:   balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

  • Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  • Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, oils, and work space restrictions.

Education, Experience, Certifications and/or Licenses

The following are the qualifications for this position.      

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED). 

  • 1 years' experience in a similar position and/or performing similar tasks.

  • Or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

  • Current and valid Driver's license per City policies outlined in the Employee Handbook.
