The City of Pearland, TX is seeking to hire a full-time Heavy Equipment Operator- Streets and Drainage to lead and improve aspects of the day-to-day operations of our Water Production Division.

Heavy Equipment Operator- Streets and Drainage earns a competitive hourly salary of $19.60 to $21.21 based on qualifications. Additionally, the city pays all premiums for our employees' dental, long-term disability protection, and life insurance plus the majority portion of the medical premium for employees and their dependents. The Day in the Life of a Heavy Equipment Operator- S&D

Job Summary: Under general supervision, drives truck and operates motorized equipment with capacity of more than 3 tons to swab ditches, set culverts and perform various other public works street maintenance and construction by performing the following duties.

Essential Functions:

  • Regular and timely attendance at work.

  • Drive and operate trucks and other motorized equipment such as dump trucks, vacuum truck, smooth drum roller, front loader, backhoe, motor grader, or gradall (excavator), and related construction equipment.

  • Shoot grade to check elevation for proper digging.

  • Work with crews to dig, hoist, and/or haul materials.

  • Assist with various semi-skilled and unskilled duties such as patching streets and loading and unloading materials.

  • Inspect and service gradall and other equipment daily by checking tires, lights, brakes, gas, water, oil, hydraulic coolant, fittings, diesel grease, and perform other minor repairs and maintenance as needed.

  • Performs emergency roadside repairs such as changing tires, installing light bulbs, and spark plugs.

  • May be assigned to operate specialized equipment such as the wood chipper or grappler.

  • Maintain telephone or radio contact with supervisor to receive instructions.

  • Serves as "essential personnel" and is required to remain available for immediate call-in due to any natural or man made disaster, or any other event the Public Works Director or City Manager deem necessary.

  • Contribute to team effort by performing other related duties as assigned.

Education, Experience, and Licenses:

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • A minimum of two (2) to five (5) years experience in street maintenance and construction including some operation of heavy equipment with a minimum of three (3) years experience in proficiently operating a gradall is required.
  • CDL Class A with "N" endorsement.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; Ability to write simple correspondence; Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

  • Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's; Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

  • Must possess the skill to operate 5 to 10 ton dump trucks and other equipment.

  • Ability to read work orders, maps, equipment operating instructions, and other work related material.

  • A knowledge of construction safety procedures and practices pertinent to traffic laws and safety procedures governing the transportation and operation of vehicles and equipment on and off public streets, is required.

  • Ability to operate a gradall, pick up truck, cutting saw, shovel, laser, pick, ladder, wheel barrow, jack hammer, chain saw, cement saw, weed eater, and other small tools

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
