Job Summary

Operate heavy equipment in support of University's day-to-day objectives with major impacts within Construction and Landscape Projects, Gravel Pit Operations, and utility repairs. Perform all duties related to the maintenance, construction/repair of campus streets, roads, and parking lots and parking garages. Perform all duties related to street signage and markings on campus. Perform snow removal on campus streets, roads, parking lots, garages and the airport facility using sophisticated snow removal equipment. Assist with storm damage clean up. Winterize and store equipment, tools, etc. Perform preventative maintenance and cleaning of vehicles such as: checking fluid levels, tires, fuel, lights, etc. On 24-hour callback for emergencies



  • High school diploma or GED

  • Three years' operating heavy equipment required. (i.e., backhoe, bulldozer, 1 1/2 ton trucks, front end loader etc.)

  • Skills in minor maintenance of heavy equipment

  • Must have demonstrated leadership abilities

  • Good verbal communication skills and the ability to give verbal and written instructions

  • Ability to read and interpret maps, blueprints and schematics

  • Computer skills to be able to access personal employee data

  • Ability to climb in and out of equipment frequently on a daily basis

  • Extreme visual concentration when operating equipment

  • Will work in all types of weather conditions, manual dexterity and coordination for equipment operation, frequent sitting on equipment

  • Ability to lift and carry objects up to 100 lbs. frequently

  • Work outdoors 75% of the time or more

  • A valid US or Canadian driver's license

  • Must be able to obtain a Commercial Driver's license (Class B) within 90 days of hire; must also maintain this license, including successful completion of required medical examinations


  • Knowledge of campus buildings and locations

Additional Information:

  • Purdue will not sponsor an employment related visa for this position

  • The hours for this position are 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; Monday through Friday

  • Occasional overtime may be required

  • A Background Check will be required for employment in this position

  • FLSA: Non-Exempt (Eligible for Overtime)

  • Retirement Eligibility: Non-exempt Defined Contribution Plan

About the Job As a Grounds Specialist you perform a wide variety of routine tasks to assist in the maintenance of facilities, equipment, roads and grounds A Day in the Life * Serves as a general maintenance person to inspect and maintain all facilities, grounds, and equipment * Performs routine carpentry, plumbing, and electrical repairs. * Ensures all employees are properly trained to operate equipment and are properly educated to follow established safety policies and procedures. * Directs, assists, and supports recreational special events as needed * Assists with purchasing and inventory of incoming supplies, materials, and repair parts. * Responsible for major and minor equipment, vehicle, and vessel repairs. * Maintains grounds which may include mowing, weeding, aerating, spraying, fertilizing, and tree trimming or removal. * Responsible for maintaining all roads such as painting, snow plowing, sanding and salting, repaving, or repairing. * Responsible for providing public safety on property, provide assistance in an emergency, or aid in rescue of accident victims. * Assists law enforcement with investigation of illegal activities on properties. * May assist and perform wildlife resource management. * May supervise, train, and direct offender work crews, assigning duties, planning and directing daily work assignments. * May act as a flagger along roads to warn motorists. What We're Looking For * A high school diploma or GED; * Valid Indiana driver's license. What We're Looking For * Working knowledge of, and ability to apply, general maintenance practices; * Working knowledge of, an ability to use skills in electrical, plumbing, and carpentry. * Ability to a wide array of hand and power tools. * Ability to determine malfunctions of electrical and mechanical equipment and make simple repairs. * Ability to operate a variety of vehicles, vessels, and large equipment. * Ability to do basic math and bookeeping for use in property operations. Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports: This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.
