Heavy Equipment Operator

MR04 - Starting rate dependent on candidate qualifications and experience

Duties/Responsibilities:

The employee in this position assists with all work in the maintenance, repair, renovation and construction of campus landscape and grounds operations; also, assists other departments/shops with excavation and underground utility work. The duties for this position include operating backhoes, front end loaders, dump trucks, bobcats, skid steers, snow plows, tractors, forklifts, trenchers, etc.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to perform hard physical work for longs periods in all kinds of weather

  • Ability to read and follow instructions

  • Ability to operate OR perform routine maintenance on light-duty earth moving equipment such as excavator, backhoe, front end loader, skid steer, tractor, telehandler, dump truck, etc.

  • Ability to safely drive trucks of various shapes and sizes

Minimum/Required Qualifications (include education, experience, skills & abilities, licenses & certifications):

  • Valid Tennessee Commercial Driver's License

  • Must be able to obtain a TN Class A or B commercial driver's license within first 6 months of employment

  • High School degree or equivalent

  • 1-year minimum experience operating heavy equipment OR performing routine maintenance on heavy equipment/diesel powered equipment

  • Demonstrates knowledge and proficiency of all ground's tools and equipment.

  • Applicant must be able to follow instructions, have a positive attitude, interact well with others in a team environment and follow the departmental attendance policy.

All Facilities Services personnel are considered "Essential Personnel." In the event of extraordinary situations, the University may suspend normal operations and classes in whole or part. In such instances, all Essential Personnel must fulfill their duties in order to (1) ensure the continuation of critical University operations; (2) attend to the needs of students and other members of the University community; and (3) protect the University's assets. Essential Personnel are expected to come to work in any and all extraordinary/emergency situations unless it is unsafe to do so or they are specifically excused by their supervisor.
