We are hiring a Heavy Equipment Operator to operate and transport all types of light duty and heavy-duty vehicles and complex construction equipment. Examples of equipment that is transported and operated by the HEO are excavators, bulldozers, backhoes, lowboy trailer, grad all, loaders, cranes, tractors, and snow removal equipment, sewer trucks, Vac trucks, sweepers, loaders, excavators, and snow removal equipment used by Public Works Operations, Traffic, Stormwater, Beach Operations, Inspectors and Highways.
Operate various types of construction equipment in a safe and legal manner and in compliance with safety regulations.
Drive, load and manage low-boy trailers, operate a manual transmission on a road tractor.
Provide efficient and professional pickup and delivery of vehicles associated with various departments, loading, and unloading vehicles safely and free of damage.
Interact with crew supervisors and/or crew members who are facilitating alignment, movement, and adjustment of the equipment to complete various City construction projects.
Service and make minor repairs and/or adjustments on all types of vehicles and equipment to prevent major breakdowns.
Assure good operating condition of all department equipment. Advise supervisor of any breakdowns and/or maintenance needs.
Maintain a good flow of communication with all personnel.
Respond to and follow proper procedures on accidents, injuries and loss or damage to any property.
Ensure City policies and procedures and all state and federal laws are followed at all times.
Maintain accurate and thorough equipment records and logbook.
Maintain inventory of stock items in Asset Management Software system
Facilitate various training programs for City employees. Examples of these trainings include Forklift certification for all forklift operators, mentoring and practicing for Commercial Driver's licenses, and trailer operator and maintenance training.
Class A Commercial Driver's License with a manual transmission endorsement required.
This position is ALPHA 1 and is required to work in excess of their normally scheduled days/hours during all inclement weather (flooding, hurricanes & snow), and/or in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies
