Purpose of the Position

  • Operates cranes, derricks, grader, backhoe, bulldozer, truck mounted clamshell, pile driver, air compressor, concrete mixer, asphalt distributor, pneumatic tired and steel drum roller, crawler, dragline, trencher, front end loader, and dump and cargo trucks.

Principal Duties/Responsibilities of the Position

  • Performs work in connection with paving and stabilizing roads and parking lots, maintaining drainage ditches, canals, railroads and sanitary landfill.

  • Loads material, performs excavations, clears land trenches for utilities and performs related work involving the use of this type of heavy equipment.

  • Check tires and tracks and general operating condition of equipment.

  • Provides field maintenance and take corrective and emergency action as required.

  • Must be qualified rigger and totally conversant with standard hand signals used in the industry.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • High school graduate or GED equivalent with:

  • degree of familiarization which is consistent with and considered usual and normal for the complexity of the work to be performed with a minimum of three (3) years experience in heavy equipment operations.

  • Required to pass performance test on critical equipment: bulldozer, cherry picker, excavator, forklift truck and motor grader.

  • Must maintain the appropriate certifications where applicable

  • Have at least a Valid Class "A" CDL and valid OSHA compliant Mobile Crane Operator Qualification and Certification in accordance with the requirements of 29 CFR 1926.1426.

  • Additionally, must qualify to operate (including but not limited to) mobile cranes, overhead cranes, aerial lifts, all forklift trucks, rigger and signal person duties, and other lifting equipment; and Special Purpose Mobile Equipment, such as bulldozers, cherry picker, excavator, Landfill compactor, motor grader, and other dirt moving equipment in the SSC Heavy Equipment and Landfill equipment inventory.

  • Ability to operate and service various rotating equipment

  • Ability to work with computers

  • Ability to work independently but follow specific detailed instructions

  • Ability to interface with various levels of personnel in a multi-cultural, team- oriented environment

Physical Requirements

  • Lift minimum of 50 pound load up from the ground frequently

  • Dexterity to operate office equipment as required by the position.

  • Must meet and be able to maintain all certain requirements required for work area.

  • Walk six hours per day

  • Bend and stoop six hours per day

  • Work overhead with minimum 20 pound load

  • Push and pull frequently throughout the day

  • Walk up/down stairs frequently

  • Stand seven hours per day

  • Climb ladders and scaffolding

  • Wear PPE gear six hours continuously (steel toe shoes, safety glasses, hard hat, gloves)

  • Tolerate extreme cold/heat for three hours continuously

Preferences

  • Prior knowledge of NASA site, experienced with working on government installations preferred.

Other Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen in order to obtain required NASA badge.

  • Must be able to provide a certified Birth Certificate (with state seal), Passport, or INS Citizenship documents on date of hire (candidate will be sent home if this paperwork is not provided upon arrival on date of hire).

  • Must have the ability to communicate the English language, both verbally and written, in an effective manner.

  • Must have, and maintain, a valid driver's license.
