Operates one or more pieces of heavy equipment such as: backhoe, tractor, loader, crane, front end loader, scraper, grader, or light equipment such as asphalt spreaders, sand/gravel distributor, etc.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed outside. Work may be exposed to a variety of weather conditions and outdoor elements, such as: excessive dampness, chill, heat, humidity, intermittent noise, and inclement cold weather. Work may be exposed to a variety of environmental conditions, such as: dry atmosphere, solvents, dirt, grease, oils, dust, constant noise, pneumatic vibration, fumes, smoke, gases, and slippery/uneven walking surfaces. Capable of working closely with others or alone, working long or irregular working hours, working shift work and/or weekends, working with protective devices, working below ground, working around moving objects or vehicles, and working around machines with moving parts and objects. Ability to operate a motor vehicle and mechanical equipment; Work requires light to moderate carrying (under 15 pounds up to 44 pounds), and light to occasional and frequent lifting (under 24 pounds up to 50 pounds), straight pulling, pulling hand over hand, simple grasping, dual simultaneous grasping, repeated bending, sitting, standing, pushing, crouching, crawling, twisting, kneeling, stooping, climbing stairs, and walking. Ability to see, write, read, count, identify shade of colors, perceive depth, and hearing is needed to perform the essential functions of this job.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Operates backhoe, graders, and loaders to install, replace and maintain streets and roads, water utility lines, mains, meters, valves, etc.
Cuts and fits pipes above or below ground to specifications necessary to install or repair water lines; assembles the pipe system; installs or replaces manholes, valves, tees, bends, and crosses.
Raises, lowers, or moves water lines as needed when a road is widened or a rights-of-way is expanded.
Removes sludge from treatment plants utilizing specialized injector tractor; monitors solid buildup, pumps sludge into injecting vehicle.
Performs basic maintenance on equipment and tools including washing, changing oil, and greasing.
Operates front end loader to pick up debris during construction projects.
May assist in performing unskilled or semi-skilled labor such as digging ditches, covering ditches, pouring concrete, mowing and/or trimming trees and shrubs.
May assist in training new employees and in assigning, checking and approving work of Laborers and other Equipment Operators.
Assists in maintaining good communication between staff, visitors and other business contacts.
Will be required to drive a City vehicle for City business use.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
At least three (3) years of experience operating heavy equipment such as backhoe, tractor, loader, crane, front end loader, scraper, and grader or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Valid Licenses and Certifications
Must possess a Valid Texas C.D.L. class A or B Driver license and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record*
As part of the minimum requirements for all positions with the City of Laredo, a thorough background check and certified school transcripts will be required from all applicants who are offered employment.
