JOB SUMMARY

The incumbent, under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, ensures the maintenance department keeps the fleet of buses running in a safe manner, and keeps the cost of operation at a minimum. The City will provide all the tools needed to perform the duties of this job.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Note: All City of Fort Smith positions require the employee to provide good customer service to both internal and external customers, maintain positive and effective working relationships with other City employees, and have regular and reliable attendance that is non-disruptive. Must show cooperation and respect to fellow employees and supervisors at all times. All other duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor and/or department director.

1.Verify vehicle maintenance complaints and prioritize findings for repair.

2.Perform routine diagnostics to determine system or component failure.

3.Make proper use of repair manuals related to area of failure.

4.Work with dispatch on changing buses as problems arise.

5.Perform onboard diagnostics using an electronic scanner.

6.Perform pinpoint test associated with fault codes.

7.Order parts and supplies through vendors as needed.

8.Perform preventive maintenance of buses in a safe and timely manner.

9.Maintain paper work on repairs including repair orders, assist with parts inventory, and answer phones on occasion.



  1. Perform transmission diagnostics and rebuilds of automatic transmissions as necessary, as well as, perform transmission flushes using modern machines (will train as needed).

  2. Perform rear differential repairs such as ring and pinion replacement, bearing replacements, crush sleeves, set up and or other moving parts as necessary.

  3. Perform front and rear suspension and steering system and steering linkage repairs including but not limited to ball Joint replacement, radius arm bushings, leaf and coil spring replacement, air suspension, etc.

  4. Must be very fluent with A/C repair. Such as compressors, dryers cooling fan replacement, thermostatic expansion valves, clutch cycling orifice tube systems, modern A/C machines, evacuate and recharge procedures, etc.

  5. Perform diagnostics on fuel system related repairs including line pressure test, fuel pump replacement, fuel rail injector service and have a working knowledge of compressed natural gas systems. Perform routine maintenance on CNG components. etc.

  6. Must be able to perform circuit resistance test, read wiring diagrams, and build simple circuits using relays, switches, fuses, circuit breakers, flashers on both positive and negative circuit switching systems. Perform electrical component testing, etc.

  7. Some fabrication will be performed involving welding, grinding, shaping, cutting using acetylene torch, cut-off saws, power equipment, etc.

  8. Perform brake inspections and repairs on standard disc/drum brakes, as well as perform air brake service. Perform diagnostics on antilock brakes and make repairs as needed.

  9. Perform engine diagnostics and repairs relating to replacement of cylinder heads, camshafts, crankshafts, valves, timing belts and chains, component testing and rebuilding as necessary.

  10. May be on call from time to time.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Four (4) years of professional automotive/heavy equipment maintenance experience
  • CDL with appropriate medical certificate (or must obtain within 90 days of hire)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's/Automotive Technician Degree

  • Seven (7) years of professional automotive/heavy equipment maintenance experience

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • The incumbent should possess knowledge of tools and equipment used in a maintenance shop.

  • Problem solving, dexterity and speed/accuracy are required to perform the duties of the position.

  • Good verbal and written communication skills as well as interpersonal skills.

Depth perception, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus are also required.

The employee is occasionally required to lift up to 50 pounds.

While performing the duties of this position the incumbent is exposed to outdoor weather conditions and is required to work near moving mechanical parts. At times, incumbent could be exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals; however, personal protective equipment is provided. The employee is also at risk of electrical shock and/or vibration.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud to very loud.
