This position performs a wide variety of mechanical and electrical repairs on diesel and gasoline-powered vehicles and equipment for the Power & Light Department. Work is performed under the supervision of the Fleet Administrator.
Performs electric or gas welding tasks on equipment, vehicles, and support service projects. Diagnoses and repairs mechanical problems on hand and power tools, automobiles and trucks of all sizes, digger derricks, aerial buckets, trenchers, bulldozers, high-loaders, backhoes and industrial or construction equipment powered by gasoline, diesel or electric. Operates computerized engine analyzer, electronic diagnostic equipment, and hydraulic test equipment.
Performs field repair on non-operational vehicles and/or equipment; assists tow truck operators in retrieval of vehicles and equipment. Designs and fabricates specialized equipment and tools. Supplies support services to other in-house departments.
Picks up and delivers equipment to job sites and vendors. Performs fleet facility repairs and maintenance. Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent with one-year hands-on experience on digger derrick and aerial bucket hydraulics and repair.
Two years recent experience in the repair of diesel and gasoline-powered engines with a demonstrated ability to diagnose and repair mechanical problems on automotive, truck, heavy equipment, and construction equipment drivetrain, chassis, electrical, and hydraulic systems. Able to read and understand work orders and shop manuals as they relate to maintenance and repair activities. Requires experience and training as a welder.
Must be able to provide all hand tools as necessary for maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment.
Must possess a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with air brake endorsement and R134A CFC Handling Certification. Knowledge of the safe use of hand and power tools, industrial safety guidelines, fleet chemicals and oil products and PC/laptop computer operations.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Skilled in welding and cutting operations. Proficiency in the operation of all fleet vehicles and equipment.
Must complete required NIMS level training within first six months of hire. Physical Demands: Must be able to bend, stoop, crawl, crouch, reach overhead, negotiate stairs and ramps, and climb ladders.
Ability to bend and lift 50 lbs and exert up to 100 lbs of force. Requires standing and working on hard floor surfaces and maintaining balance on uneven surfaces in elevated situations. Typical Working Conditions:
Work is performed in an industrial setting 75% of the time, 25% outdoors. Industrial environment with frequent exposure to smoke, fumes, noise, caustic chemicals, open flames, sparks, rotating machinery, overhead hazards, and airborne pollutants. Outdoor conditions of extreme heat and cold and varying weather conditions. Must be available for storm restoration and responding as needed during non-business hours.
Shift schedule: 3:30pm to 11:30pm Monday-Friday
