Heavy Duty Mechanic-Hvac Services (5 Openings)

JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The Heavy Duty Mechanic evaluates the needs of each system and maintains the upkeep of critical heating and cooling systems on campus. This position is responsible for the troubleshooting, installation, maintenance, and repair of the following equipment not limited to sheet metal and ductwork related to the mechanical systems on campus, refrigerated storage boxes, pumps, compressors, and other related mechanical equipment that could weigh up to 15 tons in addition to control systems. This position is essential personnel and will be required to respond to emergencies/overtime as required.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Diagnoses causes of problems and/or failures in heating/air conditioning systems to identify equipment and/or systems repair and/or replacement needs.

• Inspects HVAC systems and their components to evaluate condition, identify necessary repairs, and recommend preventive maintenance.

• Performs complex installation/repair of ductwork and HVAC equipment with the use of blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, equipment flow charts, and technical support from manufacturers and distributors.

• Repairs heating and air conditioning systems and/or components.

• Repairs, rebuilds, and/or replaces VAV boxes, drain pans, fire dampers, turning veins, and louvers per code/blueprints and schematics.

• Fabricates equipment parts to meet specialty needs and/or replace unavailable parts.

• Test and balance fume hoods and AC systems; size and install or replace exhaust fans.

• Installs and inspects existing smoke dampers and other related sheet metal items such as fascia, gutters, downspouts, wall louvers, coping, and flashing.

• Performs routine and preventive maintenance to ensure ongoing functioning of HVAC systems.

• Responds to emergencies during or after hours to resolve immediate safety concerns on campus.

• Maintains familiarity with OSHA requirements.

• Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED. (Vocational School or Technical Training is preferred.) (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

EXPERIENCE: Six (6) years of HVAC-related experience. Must have valid a Driver's License.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: Shelby County 1st class refrigeration operator's license, EPA Universal Certification, and OSHA 10 Certification or higher required OR obtain Shelby County 1st class refrigeration operator's license, EPA Universal Certification, and OSHA 10 Certification within twelve months of hire. Valid Driver's License is required. (COPY OF LICENSE/CERTIFICATION REQUIRED)

WORKING CONDITIONS: Ability to lift up to 75 lbs., climb and work from ladders for an extended period of time, and crawl and work in tight areas. Ability to work in extreme cold/heat environments.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Knowledge of typical building heating systems maintenance and operations.

• Ability to understand standard refrigeration and air conditioning equipment operations and safety protocols.

• Excellent mechanical knowledge and skill for service and repair of HVAC systems and related equipment.

• Ability to read wiring diagrams.

• Ability to use all refrigeration specialty tools. Ability to braze and solder metals using hand and power tools associated with the air conditioning trade.

• Familiarity with OSHA standards for all aspects of work including rigging techniques for the safe removal and installation of equipment and operational safety requirements.

• Knowledge of basic computer skills and Microsoft applications.

• Ability to follow instructions and maintain appropriate documentation of records.

WORK SCHEDULE: This position may frequently be required to work evenings and weekends.
