  • Heat Plant team has an exciting opening for a Heat Plant Supervisor at our University Heat Plant. Heat Plant Supervisors operate complex plant systems ensuring all environmental regulations are met and heating products are delivered safely, efficiently, and reliably, in accordance with heat plant policy and operating guides. Heat Plant Supervisors ensure all equipment and systems are maintained in optimal condition, unplanned failures are avoided, and the most complex situations are escalated to Senior Heat Plant Supervisor. Heat Plant Supervisors ensure that fuels are continuously available to the plant and its equipment. They manage the performance and assign tasks of Heat Plant Operators and Heat Plant Maintenance Mechanics. Additionally, they may manage the Heat Plant during Manager off shifts and weekends. Heat Plant Supervisors directly supervise the operation and maintenance of heat plant employees and equipment providing hot water and high pressure steam for University consumption.

This position supports a 24/7 operation and requires a variable schedule of rotating days, including weekends, evenings and/or nights. Shift premium is provided.

Duties Include:

Function as a working supervisor in monitoring Heat Plant operating equipment, and complex levels of Heat Plant maintenance matters in accordance with policy and operating guidelines:

Operates complex plant systems ensuring all environmental regulations are met and heating products are delivered safely, efficiently, and reliably, in accordance with heat plant policy and operating guides. Ensures all equipment and systems are maintained in optimal condition, unplanned failures are avoided, and the most complex situations are escalated to Senior Heat Plant Supervisor. Ensures that fuels are continuously available to the plant and its equipment. Additionally, manages the Heat Plant during Manager off shifts and weekends. Directly supervises the operation and maintenance of heat plant employees and equipment providing hot water and high-pressure steam for University consumption.

Ensure that performance expectations are clear, well communicated, and relate to the goals and objectives of the plant.:

Formulates operating procedures, schedules staff work assignments, inspects completed assignments, assigns heat plant project work, and sets work expectations to provide the highest levels of customer service. Coordinates with Operations Manager and area supervisors in re-allocating plant personnel for alternate maintenance assignments during Natural gas boiler operations. Responsible for obtaining maintenance department staff for after-hours, weekend, holiday, etc. that are needed to perform call back maintenance work. Reviews operating reports and records received from heating plant operators, forecasts fuel needs and requisitions all materials and supplies to ensure availability of materials and fuels. Provides documentation to support recommended corrective and disciplinary actions. Addresses employee complaints and resolves informal grievances. Positions start the hiring process, interview applicants, and recommend hire, or promotion.

Develops, implements, and evaluates employee performance evaluations and midyear reviews. Measures daily performance of staff and implements improvement strategies. Plans training of employees to maintain standards of the industry, including all safety aspects of job assignments.

Respond to escalated calls, alarms and compliance inquiries.:

Participates in the operation, maintenance, adjustments, and repair of boilers and associated mechanical equipment to ensure specified operating conditions are followed. Supervises and performs the operation of all environmental emission control systems to always ensure a safe environment. Ensures Regulatory requirements are maintained, current and submitted to regulatory entity on time.

Perform all duties of Heat Plant Operators and Heat Plant Maintenance Mechanics.:

Prepares specifications for repair or maintenance projects and inspects work in progress or completed by staff or contracted to ensure proper and economical procedures. Responsible for administration, application and oversight of all LOTO, Confined Space, Hot Work, Energized Work and Work Permit systems.

In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Required Qualifications:

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent

Experience:

  • At least four years of direct experience in an industrial maintenance and operations environment, and two years of leadership and/or supervisory experience.

  • Considerable knowledge of high-pressure boiler, and/or turbine operations, water treatment and auxiliary equipment associated with power plant operations.

  • Knowledge of supervisory practices and principles including the ability to provide training, coaching and feedback.

  • Considerable skill in the operation of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic equipment.

  • Ability to supervise the work of others, to analyze and regulate power plant equipment, and to maintain accurate records.

  • Interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills in order to communicate effectively.

  • Ability to work overtime as required and during emergency events.

Licensure:

  • American Society of Power Engineers (ASOPE) licensure is required within 12 months of hire.

Physical Demands:

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

Compensation:

Anticipated Hiring Range: $35.00 - $39.00 ($72,800 - $81,120 per year). Employees new to UVA are eligible for a sign-on bonus of $4,000 for a one-year commitment. T his is a full-time position with UVA benefits . Employee benefits package highlights include:

Physical Demands :

Employee will be required to lift various weights, climb ladders and stairs in order to complete jobs. The use of both hands and a repetitive motion will be required while performing duties.
