This Health Care Technician I position will serve on the Therapeutic Response Team (TRT). The primary purpose of this position is to provide interventions that help de-escalate residents who are in crisis and who are high risk for the use of physical intervention. The position will perform a wide variety of duties directly and indirectly involving total care, treatment and training of persons who are developmentally disabled in order to promote growth, productivity, and dignity. Job responsibilities include the following:

  • Ensuring the physical and emotional well being of the residents.

  • Provide training and support with personal care, domestic skills, leisure-social skills, and self- management, ensuring the supervision and safety of residents, and assistance in program and/or training areas.

  • Observe all resident behaviors, identify, and de-escalate situations, recognize changes in behaviors and take action applying knowledge of resident's diagnosis and appropriate interventions.

  • Implement specialized protective device to prevent self-harm and injury.

  • Follow clinical directives and//or programmatic treatment plans.

  • Implement appropriate/ approved intervention procedures to encourage positive behaviors and render assistance to staff as needed.

  • Ongoing observation of residents and their activities / interactions; regularly re-directing to prevent or correct inappropriate behaviors.

  • Implementing policies and procedures during emergency and crisis situations              

Work Hours: 8:00a.m. - 5:00p.m.

  • A valid driver's license.

  • Ability and desire to work with persons with developmental disabilities, basic knowledge of healthcare techniques and safety.

  • Ability to make observations and make written and oral reports.

  • Ability to do simple math computations.

  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

  • Ability to pass CPI and advance CPI and obtain knowledge of restraint types used for individuals.

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds on a regular basis (6-8 times daily) and be able to stoop, bend, walk, run short distances (50 yards) and climb stairs without limitations of a permanent nature to provide adequate supervision of the assigned population in the home. Some state job postings say you can qualify by an "equivalent combination of education and experience". High school or General Educational Development diploma; 

  • or-

An equivalent combination of education and experience.

Eligibility for Sign-on Bonus

Qualified applicants must be selected from the candidate pool of this posting and meet the State policy following requirements:

A newly hired permanent full time or permanent part-time employee who works 30 to 40 hours per week is eligible for a sign-on bonus (this will be prorated for employees working less than 40 hours per week).

An employee is not eligible for a sign-on bonus if: 

(1) the employee has held a position in North Carolina State government, including the judicial system, or the University of North Carolina system within the last 12 months (the employee shall remain ineligible for 12 months from the separation date); 

(2) the employee has previously received a sign-on bonus from any State agency; 

(3) or DHHS has paid any contract placement or recruitment fees.

This Sign-on Bonus is contingent upon budget and final eligibility determination as of the effective date of hire. Additional information regarding the Sign-on Policy can be found here.
