Job Summary

Position is responsible for performing advanced indirect and selected direct patient care duties in support of the nursing process in a competent manner under the direction of an RN or LVN as outlined in the Skills Inventory and for performing related clerical functions; responsible for performing phlebotomy duties as well as for serving as preceptor and resource to staff. Position also responsible for coordinating and maintaining a variety of non-clinical and ancillary services of assigned patient care unit in support of patient care services to maintain efficiency and quality of unit operations.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Associate's degree in Business or related field; or equivalent in education and experience

Licenses/Certifications:

  • BLS Certification required and one (1) or more of the following preferred:

  • Licensed Paramedic or

  • Certified as a Nursing Assistant by the Texas Department of Health; or

  • Nursing Student with two (2) years of clinical studies or

  • Graduate of an accredited foreign nursing program with nursing credentials/licensure in the home country or

  • Medical Assistant; or

  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) from an accredited program

Experience / Knowledge / Skills:

  • Minimum of two (2) years in a hospital or long-term care facility, or related experience

  • Minimum of two (2) years experience in administrative functions to include extensive customer service contact, financial management, supplies/equipment and/or hospital patient care experience

  • Strong organizational ability; ability to be clearly understood through verbal communication in face-to face encounters and by telephone; ability to assimilate information verbally and in writing in order to compose written correspondence; strong command of English language; working knowledge of medical terminology; strong customer service management skills

  • Ability to understand written instructions and perform basic mathematical calculations; demonstrates skills for assigned specialty area/function or assigned procedures, including a working knowledge of basic medical terminology and computer software skills

  • Demonstrated ability to perform duties with increased responsibilities

  • Ability to perform duties requiring prolonged standing, walking, stooping, bending, and lifting

Principal Accountabilities

  • Coordinates and maintains a variety of non-clinical and ancillary services of assigned patient care units including, but not limited to, environmental services, maintenance, central supplies, food/nutrition, and related unit support functions.

  • Monitors inventory of supplies, analyzes usage patterns and ensures optimal par levels; requisitions supplies and equipment as well as maintenance repair services; ensures that maintenance and repair needs are met; tracks and documents lost or damaged equipment and supplies.

  • Receives physicians and visitors on the unit to create an environment of service; identifies, acknowledges, and responds to patient, physician, staff needs; manages patient call light process, ensuring patient needs are met within 5 minutes of request.

  • Ensures appropriate patient flow by admitting/transferring/discharging patient in computer system within 15 minutes of notification and notifying appropriate personnel of patient status; places patient level on room doors upon admission.

  • Schedules patient testing, delivers specimens to lab; receives STAT lab results and posts in the patient record; assists in ordering and serving patient meals, transporting patients, and performing indirect patient care duties at a competent level and according to the needs of the patient population served.

  • Maintains complete and accurate patient record; enters physician orders without error within 30 minutes of receipt; maintains physician of record on computer and patient chart to ensure appropriate routing of patient information to correct physician; enters patient charges without error.

  • Identifies and facilitates resolution of unit operational problems independently, collaborating with manager to resolve complex problems; collects and analyzes data related to unit operational activities as directed by manager to include, but not limited to, customer service, patient charges, and supply utilization.

  • Performs advanced indirect and direct patient care duties in a competent manner as directed by a physician, registered nurse or licensed vocational nurse within the scope of hospital-approved PCA III skills inventory according to the needs/age of the patient/population served; takes patients' TPR and blood pressure, monitors intake and output, and maintains related records.

  • Enters physician orders via computer and coordinates schedules of diagnostic testing; assists patients with written teaching protocols; performs assigned treatments as directed; prepares patients for meals and feeds them; performs/assists with baths; maintains patient rooms in orderly fashion.

  • Reports any changes in patient's condition to the patient's nurse or charge nurse.

  • Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.

  • Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.
