Job Description
General Purpose of Job:
Under the supervision of the Charge RN, the Health Unit Coordinator assist in the maintenance of order for daily operations of the nursing unit.
Essential Duties:
This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.
- Welcomes and greets patients, visitors, physicians, and other Caregivers that enter the department, and offers assistance using AIDET.
- Answers incoming telephone calls promptly and courteously, states greeting, name, unit and offer of assistance. Takes messages and delivers to appropriate Caregiver in a timely manner.
- Maintains the patient's medical chart by ensuring all forms are properly labeled and incorporates them into the chart in a timely, organized and accurate manner. Confirms each patient chart contains a signed consent for treatment. Completes and documents physician ordered consults timely and accurately.
- Creates patient procedural consent forms using information provided from providers' orders
- Maintains the departmental records of admission, discharges, files, reports, schedules, etc.
- Maintains the Pyxis patient label book.
- Answers and screens patient call lights and forwards request to appropriate Caregiver, as delegated.
- Updates RN assignment board each shift, as delegated.
- Maintains unit copy/fax machines and printers with paper and toner.
- Orders and maintains PAR levels of unit supplies and forms
- Retrieves unit mail from the mail room daily, distributing the mail to Caregivers and Leadership as appropriate, as delegated.
- Communicates significant information regarding patient to appropriate health care team.
- Identifies and trouble shoots technology failures and handles computer down time. Checks EPIC downtime PC daily. Completes daily checklist accordingly.
- Transports patient specimens to laboratory as delegated.
- Actively participates as a team member of assigned unit. Constructively addresses patient and team issues to ensure quality patient care and a collaborative work environment.
- Indepently offers assistance to patient care team or other staff.
- Demonstrates adaptability to change and flexibility in accepting various assignments.
- Maintains a clean and orderly nurses station, personal work areas and storage area. Maintains and utilizes pneumatic tube station for clerical and clinical functions.
- Remains on duty until relieved by next replacement or released by Charge RN.
- Reports off to oncoming shift or Charge RN, verbally and or in written format.
- Communicates breaks and absences from desk with Charge RN.
- Acts as preceptor for new Caregivers as assigned.
- Maintains hospital standards by participating in mandatory in-services and requirements.
- Accepts assignments, as delegated by Manager, Unit Leadership or Charge RN.
- Support unit lockdown by maintaining security code lists, answering phone and verifying entry to unit via camera and confirmed access code.
- Faxing d/c summary reports.
- Admit/Transfer patients in EPIC.
- Calling codes: cardiac, respiratory, code pink, code BERT.
Job Requirements

Work Experience • 6 months of office experience within the last 5 years OR • 6 months of daily Epic, or equivalent EMR, use within the last 12 months Education • High school diploma or GED Specialized Knowledge and Skills • Demonstrated knowledge of computer applications, software and keyboard functions. • Clerical skills necessary to perform data entry, prepare reports, and tabulate routine data. • Interpersonal skills for effective communication. • Knowledge of basic medical terminology, health insurance, policies, or procedures. • Ability to view a computer monitor for prolonged periods. • Work requires the ability to move throughout the nursing units. • Able to respond to and prioritize multiple requests and variable degrees of unpredictability requiring adaptability in work activities. • Work entails coming in contact with patient specimens during transport
