The Medical and Surgery Dermatology Health Technician is a member of the Dermatology team, a division of Hospital & Specialty Medicine service, VA Puget Sound Health Care System. The incumbent provides assistance during Dermatology surgical procedures and to Dermatologists during patient consultations/follow-up appointments. The incumbent will participate in the planning and implementation of complex procedures under supervision of the dermatology surgery team and by Dermatologists.

Duties

Duties include but not limited to:

  • Prepares exam rooms for patient care assuring rooms are cleaned and organized between patients

  • Assures supplies and equipment are available prior to surgical procedures

  • Identifies patients who may require special preparation

  • Prepares, organizes, maintains sterile field for dermatology surgery procedures. Prepares sterile surgical field with required items for specified procedure

  • Handles instruments, supplies and equipment during Dermatology Surgery procedures, ranging from simple to complex

  • Assists the Dermatology surgeon: prepping, positioning,· prepare skin grafts, suctioning, holding retractors, applying skin staples, cutting sutures

  • Maintains high fidelity procedure for management of dermatology specimens within the clinic, labeling and prepare dermatology specimens for transfer to pathology department

  • Plans and discusses procedures with Dermatology surgeons.

  • Maintains Dermatology surgery suite and medical clinic areas

  • Assesses medical and surgical equipment needs

  • Maintains supplies and materials

  • Contacts patient prior to surgical visit

  • Provides patient education and information regarding surgical procedures

  • Supports the Medical Dermatology and Surgery Dermatology Coordinators

  • Provides phototherapy treatments for patients

  • Maintains high quality procedures for obtaining surgical images, downloading images from cameras and uploading images into the patient record

  • Alerts providers of schedule/procedure changes

Physical Requirements:

Duties regularly require providing manual assistance in lifting and positioning patients. There are extensive periods of regular and recurring standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing, reaching, and prolonged stretching to provide easy accessibility of instruments and supplies for the Dermatology surgeon or Dermatologist during minor procedures.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement, 10/03/2024.

Individual Occupational Requirement:An IOR is a basic requirement that must be met in order to qualify for the 0640 occupational series.

Specialized Experience: Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled.

In addition to meeting the above Individual Occupational Requirement, you must have one year of specialized experience and/or education as described below:

  • Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: prepares exam rooms for patient care; prepares, organizes, maintains sterile field for dermatology surgery procedures; handles instruments, supplies and equipment during Dermatology surgery procedures. Assists the Dermatology surgeon: prepping, positioning,· prepare skin grafts, suctioning, holding retractors, applying skin staples, cutting suture. Provides patient education and information regarding surgical procedures; contacts patient prior to surgical visit. Maintains high fidelity procedure for management of dermatology specimens within the clinic, labeling and prepare dermatology specimens for transfer to pathology department.

  • Education: Applicants may substitute education for the experience required for the GS-06 level. You must understand that education at the GS-5 level or above is generally, not applicable unless directly related. I have successfully completed one year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that information cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered as satisfying the 1 year of full-time study requirement. Part-time graduate education is creditable in accordance with its relationship to a year of full-time study at the school attended. If using education to qualify for the GS-06 grade, such education must include courses directly related to the work of the position. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED)
