This position serves as an emergency medical technician (EMT) at the Cheyenne River Service Unit. The purpose of the position is to perform basic technical health care extender functions within the emergency medical arena in response to various accidents and other emergencies involving injury and illness. The incumbent will also be responsible for performing Nursing Assistant and Driver Duties. Position is subject to "standby" duty wand will be required to rotate to all shifts.

Perform daily maintenance checks on Ambulance & medical equipment
Operate Emergency vehicles
Assist patient packaging on scene of accident.
Perform or assist with patient care.

GS-03 Health Technician (EMT) Have at least

  • 6 months of general experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter of the position to be filled, or completed 1 year of education above high school that included study in medical, health, or related fields, or a combination of education and experience that when combined fully meet the minimum qualifications for this position. The total percentage equals at least 100 percent to qualify for this GS-03 grade level.

GS-04, Health Technician (EMT) Have at least 6 months of general experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter of the position to be filled AND 6 months of specialized experience. This specialized experience is related to the work of the position and equivalent to at least the GS-03 level in the Federal service as described in the vacancy announcement.

Examples of Specialized Experience: Nursing assistant duties, basic skill with emergency and patient transport, knowledge and skill in emergency medical techniques, or has completed 2 years of education above high school that included at least 12 semester hours in subjects related to the position or a combination of education and experience that when combined fully meet the minimum qualifications for this position. The total percentage equals at least 100 percent to qualify for this GS-04 grade level.

GS-05, Health Technician (EMT) 1 year of specialized experience that has equipped me with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. This specialized experience is related to the work of the position and equivalent to at least the GS-04 level in the Federal service as described in the vacancy announcement.

Examples of Specialized Experience: Nursing assistant duties, skill in emergency communication techniques, working knowledge of topographic anatomy and the major body parts, or completed a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study in Emergency Medical Services, or that included at least 24 semester hours in EMT-related courses OR I have successfully completed pertinent specialized training courses in EMT, while serving in the Armed Forces which is creditable on a month-for-month basis up to the 1 year of specialized experience, or a combination of education and experience that when combined fully meet the minimum qualifications for this position. The total percentage equals at least 100 percent to qualify for this GS-05 grade level.

Time-In-Grade Requirements:
Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave is earned.

This position has promotion potential to the GS-5? grade level. Promotion to the next grade level is at management's discretion and is based on your demonstrated ability to perform the higher level duties, the continuing need for the higher level duties, and "Regulatory/Administrative" approval. Promotion to the next higher grade level is not guaranteed and no promise of promotion is implied.?

Duties: Using the Community Priority Lists, home visits will be made as well as school visits to determine needs in general health care. Other home visits will be made on a referral basis when collecting needed data. Priority will be given to the elderly living alone without family living close by. Assists in emergency care of the sick and injured when the need arises. CHR's will work closely with the Indian Health Service ambulance Service.Follow-up on all patients returning home for the hospital, especially the prenatal, postnatal, tuberculosis patient, and those returning home from the hospital against medical advice.Reports sanitation and health hazards to the CHR/Environmental Health Technician. Makes referrals to all necessary programs or resources such as hospital, Counseling Service, Four Bands Healing Center, and LIEAP Program and follows-ups as needed.Assists Tribe/I.H.S. Health Team with Field Clinics and health education.Transports the sick and injured to the medical facilities for special care, which are without any means of transportation.
