This assignment will perform illness and injury management for students, with oversight from a Registered Nurse (RN), the School Health Assistant performs delegated nursing tasks, including medication administration, health room and isolation room monitoring and is the primary point of contact for health services in the absence of the RN. Other duties include monitoring student safety, provide student redirection, facilitate instructional breaks, and high levels of confidentiality related to all student data.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Administer and document student medications following established Oregon City School District (OCSD) procedures.
Perform first aid and delegated health care tasks for students with acute and chronic health conditions.
Assist District School Nurses with immunization management.
Provide emergency care, including Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)/Automated External Defibrillator (AED) as necessary.
Complete daily health record documentation following established OCSD procedures that is accurate and confidential.
Communicate necessary information to appropriate school nurse, school personnel, and parents/guardians while maintaining confidentiality.
Assess student health needs for students that are exhibiting medical symptoms, i.e. fever, congestion, rash, difficulty breathing, etc., who are referred to the health room or isolation room.
Utilize personal safety techniques to avoid exposure and injury to self, students, and other staff.
Consistently communicate in a collaborative and professional manner and work effectively with parents, students, school staff, administration staff, and public.
Ability to react quickly, calmly, and decisively in a crisis.
Attend department and other staff meetings.
Perform other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Ability to successfully complete training for: Medication Administration (ORS 339.867-870); Training for Emergency Glucagon Providers (ORS 433.800- 830); and Treatment of Severe Allergic Reaction (ORS 433.800-830). ORS 433.800 - requires individual trained to respond to a severe allergic reaction, and to administer emergency glucagon injections.

High school diploma or equivalent required. At least 1 year experience (within the last 5 years) working with groups of children in a professional or volunteer capacity, or
Any combination of education and experience, which would provide the applicant with the desired knowledge, skills and ability, required to perform the job.

Current CPR/AED certification that meets AHA Red Cross Standards and states that the individual has successfully completed a skill/return demonstration or ability to obtain certification.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience/training working in health or medical field. (CNA, EMT, Personal Care Assistant)
College level coursework related to nursing/phlebotomy.
Diabetic health assistance experience.
Experience managing a school health room and/or school instructional assistant or school secretary related experience.
Spanish Bilingual.
Successful experience in working with culturally diverse families and communities, or have otherwise demonstrated a commitment to strengthening engagement of a diverse community and skill in communicating with a diverse population.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Ability to make independent judgments with prescribed policies and procedures and perform essential functions with a minimum amount of supervision.
Ability to secure and maintain confidentiality of medical and student information according to OCSD procedures and policies.
Ability to follow all health and safety protocols as required CSD procedures and policies.
Ability to demonstrate competency through the evidencing the ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheets. Ability to access, enter, and retrieve data into/from computers and databases.
Knowledge of modern office procedures, techniques, and office management skills.
Ability to utilize correct grammar, punctuation, spelling of English language, and basic math skills to compile data and complete reports according to CSD procedures.

NUMBER OF HOURS PER DAY: 6.0 HOURS PER DAY

NUMBER OF DAYS WORKED PER SCHOOL YEAR: 181 DAYS PER YEAR

HOURLY RATE OF PAY: $18.74 - $26.37 PER HOUR (RANGE 10)
