Are you excited about protecting people and their environment from radiation hazards while enabling the use of technologies that utilize radioactive materials and radiation? Do you enjoy learning about unique applications of radiation in developing technologies? If so, we are looking for someone like you to join the environmental health and safety team at APL.

We are seeking a talented Health Physicist to provide professional guidance with the planning, implementing, and monitoring of radiation protection activities. Using sound technical judgment, you will work to ensure that licensed materials are procured, used, stored, transported and disposed in a safe, secure, and legal manner. You will prevent or minimize adverse effects to onsite personnel, the surrounding public, and the environment while facilitating groundbreaking research programs.

As a Health Physicist at APL...

  • You will lead the implementation and maintenance of a facility safety program for a 25 meV linear accelerator facility.

  • You will have primary responsibility for radiation safety programs related to our Broad Scope Radiation license.

  • You will be the technical specialist for all non-ionizing radiation challenges.

  • You will engage with researchers to provide insight into potential uses of radioactive materials and radiation to further their research goals.

  • You will provide back-up support for other health physics inquiries and related project.

  • You will have the opportunity to cross-train with other technical specialists in a broad range of environmental health and safety specialty areas.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications if you

  • Have a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Health Physics or closely related area.

  • Have 1-3 years of experience in radiation safety.

  • Are energized by working in a collaborative, team environment.

  • Enjoy a variety of challenging tasks in a dynamic workplace.

  • Have a career goal to become certified by the American Board of Health Physics.

Job Summary: The Acoustics and Electromagnetics Group (KTY) is seeking a physicist to develop and evaluate advanced acoustic and electromagnetic concepts for undersea warfare (USW), conduct system performance analysis, and develop physics phenomenology and performance models. Responsibilities include acoustic and electromagnetic system concept development, development of models for acoustic and electromagnetic phenomena affecting USW systems, analysis of real-world and exercise data, and sea test planning. Duties: * Develop and evaluate advanced sonar and electromagnetic system concepts and models of performance for undersea warfare applications (35%) * Conduct data analysis and compare results with model predictions (35%) * Document and present results (30%) Note: This job summary and listing of duties is for the purpose of describing the position and its essential functions at time of hire and may change over time. Required Qualifications: PhD degree in physics, applied mathematics, electrical engineering, or related discipline with experience in acoustics and/or electromagnetics applications or alternatively an MS degree in a related technical discipline with at least 3 years of related work experience and demonstrated research capabilities. Strong oral and written communication skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Well developed computer programming skills applicable to scientific analysis (e.g., MATLAB, Fortran). Desired Qualifications: Professional experience in acoustics and electromagnetics systems development and evaluation for undersea warfare applications. Experience leading project teams. Special Working Conditions: Working in closed area facilities. Occasional travel to support meetings and participation in field tests, which may include aboard civilian or Navy ships associated with experiment conduct. Security: Top Secret clearance is required to perform the essential functions of the job. Applicant selected will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information.
