The Health Information Specialist will work under the prescribed procedure to cover the HIM Department by answering the telephone and routing calls to the appropriate person. This person will be navigating between multiple medical systems including Cerner for retrieval of medical records and patient demographics. The HIM Specialist is responsible for preparation of paper medical records and loose material for scanning.

Pick-up/receive paper records from nursing units/patient care areas, reconcile receipt of records, prep records by purging data that is not maintained in the legal medical record and check out records in tracking system.
Prepare loose documents for scanning by verifying each document has a Financial number, look up patient data in Cerner for any documents missing the Financial number and add the Financial number to the document. Batch documents for scanning.
Ability to pay close attention to detail to detect missing and/or incorrect information in the medical record and must also have the knowledge and skills needed to make the corrections when appropriate
Prepare medical record audits by verifying documents are scanned into medical records accurately and Birth Certificate information correctly entered into State of IL system and facility systems.
May process requests for release of information according to regulatory requirements
Ability to chart abstract, pick-up Birth Certificate worksheets, interview new mothers and process for completion of Birth Certificate
Ability to maintain production standards as set forth by the HIM Operational Manager
High School diploma
Ability to enter data at an acceptable level of speed and accuracy and to operate a computer
See, read, and/or operate computers, telephones, office equipment, documents, labels, including manipulating paper requiring the ability to move fingers and hands.
Remain sitting, standing, or walking for long periods of time to perform work on a computer, telephone, or other equipment.
Frequent interactions with associates, patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require associate to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information banding patients, etc.
Need to obtain and distribute supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling heavy items (over 50 lbs.).
