Position Description

Under the direct supervision of the Harris County Public Health (HCPH) Clinical Site Operations Manager, the Medical Assistant supports patient care services provided by the Family Planning/Healthy Texas Women programs and other supporting programs on a mobile platform. The Medical Assistant will be responsible for performing clinical tasks in accordance with all HCPH protocols and will be required to circulate through other Disease Control and Clinical Prevention (DCCP) programs when indicated.

Medical/Laboratory Assistance Duties

  • Assists with patient appointments by performing phlebotomy (including capillary and venous draws), urine collection, pregnancy tests, lead testing, vital signs, patient histories, etc.

  • Prepares and labels all patient specimens (stools for parasite, blood, sputum, etc.) for transport to appropriate laboratories

  • Provides in-room support for all clinical staff during the clinic visits as needed

  • Maintains laboratory and exam rooms in a neat, clean, and orderly manner

  • Assists in performing data entry and electronic data processing by using the HCPH electronic medical record system (Epic), Microsoft Excel, and any other related programs/sites

Inventory/Quality Assurance Duties

  • Inventories supplies and forms

  • Submits items for ordering (via Ewise and contract laboratory) as needed

  • Stocks the exam rooms with all medical supplies necessary for client screening

  • Assists with rotating dated stock to prevent loss

  • Performs quality assurance on all needed medical equipment (example: lead analyzer)

Clerical Duties

  • Faxes and scans medical records as requested

  • Prepares and sets up patient waiting/reception area before clinic sessions

  • Returns all equipment to the proper storage area after clinic session ends


  • Performs other duties as assigned, including special tasks involved in responding to an emergency event

  • Completion of a community college or business/technical school Medical Assistant program or Certified Nurse's Aide Program; and

  • CPR certification

  • Six (6) months as a Medical Assistant or Nurse Assistant in a medical office, hospital, or laboratory environment

  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite

  • Experience working with Epic Systems or other EMR (Electronic Medical Recording) Software

  • Valid driver's license required (Texas upon hire), clean driving record, and reliable transportation

  • Certified Medical Assistant (Texas upon hire)

  • Phlebotomy Certification
