The Health Coordinator Position

Salem Public Schools is committed to empowering educators and fostering structures that prioritize distributed leadership. The Health Coordinator will take the lead in galvanizing the 6-12 Health teachers around the 2023 MA Comprehensive Health and PE Framework . This one year $3,000 grant-funded position will work closely with the Academics and Student Support teams, across the secondary schools, and with the DESE-approved implementation provider to coordinate the implementation of the Comprehensive Health Frameworks. Compensation will be awarded in the form of a $1500 stipend in December and a $1500 stipend in May.

Health Coordinator Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with the Academics and Student Support team to create a health vision.

  • Plan and facilitate 4 team meetings Aug 27 (10:00p-12:00p), Nov. 5 (8:00a-10:00a), Jan 29 12:30p-2:30p, Mar. 5 (8:00a-10:00a).

  • Meet regularly with PE Lead, Director of Nursing, __EXEC Director of Student Supports, and CIA 6-12 Director for an integrated approach to the alignment of the complete frameworks.

  • Lead the review of and vertical articulation of the MA Frameworks in the Salem context 6-12, including reporting standards and proficiency scales.

  • Make recommendations for K-5 implementation.

  • Lead pilot of curriculum resources.

  • Be knowledgeable of (endorsed preferred) SEI strategies and pedagogy required to meet the needs of multilingual learners.

  • Participate on the District Wellness Committee and provide insights to the team on district vertical alignment and fidelity to curriculum frameworks.

  • Utilize student support data to inform decisions about priority standards and continuous improvement strategies toward ensuring all students are physically and social-emotionally healthy.

  • Participate in all DESE-approved implementation provider visits and meetings (DESE is still building this model and determining providers).

  • Perform additional duties that may arise including those required by the grant

  • Districts will develop and submit a district CHPE Implementation Plan.

  • Note: DESE anticipates offering optional facilitated CHPE Implementation Planning workshops in Winter/Spring 2024 to support districts to create, review and/or revise CHPE implementation plans, in addition to offerings beginning summer 2024.

  • District plans, among other things, will include opportunities that are culturally responsive, collaborative, equitable, and respectful of diverse languages, norms, and values to engage students and families throughout the selection and implementation of revised CHPE curriculum.

  • Districts teams will perform an analysis of their CHPE standards coverage and gap analysis with their current curricula.

  • Note: Coaching support and technical assistance is anticipated to be available through DESE-pre-qualified vendor(s).

  • Districts will select and engage in training related to CHPE curriculum to more fully align to the 2023 Comprehensive Health and Physical Education Framework.

  • Note: DESE is in process of developing a CHPE Curriculum Guide to identify aligned curricula.

  • District leadership will recruit and schedule teachers and other educators (coaches, directors, etc.) to participate in professional development, coaching and/or professional learning communities (PLCs). Offerings will be scheduled in summer 2024, school year 2024-2025, and summer 2025 based on needs identified by the cohort of grantees.

  • District teams will work with the Department and it's PD vendor(s) to identify, recommend and/or develop supports and resources to ensure that all students have opportunities to engage in comprehensive, well-rounded, inclusive, medically accurate, developmentally and age-appropriate educational opportunities that include physical education, health education, and the development of social and emotional competencies.

Job Requirements:

  • Current teacher in Salem Public Schools

  • Massachusetts educator certification in Health/Family and Consumer Sciences,

  • Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) Endorsement or commitment to obtaining the SEI Endorsement

  • Ability to work flexibly outside of contractual hours including the summer
