This position is located in the Transportation Department at Murdoch Developmental Center and functions as a provider of medical care and transport to various hospitals and medical facilities for appointments and procedures.  Job responsibilities include the following, and any other duties assigned:

  • Transporting patients on campus to Medical Clinic, Dental Clinic, Laboratory, X-ray, Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy.

  • Provides medical care and transport on Murdoch Developmental Center's ambulance for emergent and non-emergent off-campus medical care.

  • When on off-campus medical trips, this position assists medical staff with patient behavior management and assists with compliance with examinations.

  • Medical providers are not always experienced in caring for patients with IDD and this position assists in making the resident more comfortable and at ease while relating to the provider any special needs.

  • Serves as liaison between the medical staff of Murdoch Developmental Center and the facility in which the resident is to receive care, when transporting residents for medical purposes.

  • Responsible for assisting people that live at Murdoch Developmental Center into vehicles (ambulatory, non-ambulatory, wheelchairs, and stretchers) and transporting to scheduled destinations.

  • Other routine duties include picking up medicine boxes, pharmacy requisitions, charts, lab specimens, and x-rays from campus buildings.

This is a full-time position and eligible for the full State benefits package including health insurance, paid sick/vacation/holidays, retirement, etc.  The normal working hours are Monday

  • Friday, 8:00 a.m.

  • 5:00 p.m., some flexibility required to meet center's needs.

About Murdoch Developmental Center:

MDC is one of three regional developmental centers operating as part of the Division of State Operated Healthcare Facilities (DSOHF).  MDC in Butner serves 25 counties in central NC. Murdoch has approximately 1600 employees providing residential services and supports to people with IDD, complex behavioral challenges and/or medical conditions whose clinical treatment needs exceed the level of care available in the community.  In addition to regional admissions for adults, MDC operates four statewide programs, which include support for children and adolescents with complex needs. Centrally located, MDC is convenient to Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill.  To be considered for employment, applicants must be in good standing with the North Carolina Health Care Personnel Registry.

  • Must have EMT certification

  • Must have a valid NC driver's license.

Management Preferences

  • Three years work experience in a healthcare support services setting.

  • EMT certification.

  • Ability to work with and maintain a therapeutic attitude towards developmentally disabled clients is required.   

  • A desire to learn behavior support and coaching techniques that work for the people at Murdoch

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team with good demeanor and professionalism

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with the population served, staff and others both orally and in writing

  • Proven ability to maintain professional work relationships and boundaries

  • Anticipate hazards and perform all duties safely

  • Demonstrated ability to be able to communicate and document observations and recommendations effectively

  • Be willing to learn and apply computer applications for personal benefits, performance plans and required training

Physical Requirements

Ability to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

  • Nurse Aide I and Nurse Aide II listing is NOT required for this position.

High school or General Educational Development diploma and one year of related work experience;

OR 

an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Condition for Continued Employment As required, listing as a Nurse Aide I by the North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation. As applicable, listing as a Nurse Aide II by the North Carolina Board of Nursing. As applicable, North Carolina Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification.

Eligibility for Sign-on Bonus

Qualified applicants must be selected from the candidate pool of this posting and meet the State policy following requirements:

A newly hired permanent full time or permanent part-time employee who works 30 to 40 hours per week is eligible for a sign-on bonus (this will be prorated for employees working less than 40 hours per week).

An employee is not eligible for a sign-on bonus if:  

(1) the employee has held a position in North Carolina State government, including the judicial system, or the University of North Carolina system within the last 12 months (the employee shall remain ineligible for 12 months from the separation date);  

(2) the employee has previously received a sign-on bonus from any State agency;  

(3) or DHHS has paid any contract placement or recruitment fees.
