CMHHIP is a 24 hour behavioral health acute care facility that is intended to provide a safe, secure, and therapeutic setting for patients with both psychiatric and medical issues. The services provided include evaluation and treatment for patients who are severely mentally ill, and the goal of this facility is to return patients to their optimal level of functioning and assist them in returning to the community as appropriate.

Description of Job

We are seeking an exceptional individual for the HCT I (Licensed Practical Nurse / Psychiatric Care Technician - MI) position within our facility. Our ideal candidate is a caring leader who will provide professional skilled nursing activities in a mental health setting that include: acute care, chronic support, assessment, and interventions. Although this position will be assigned to a specific shift and unit, you may be required to work any unit.

Under the direction of a Registered Nurse is responsible to: administer nursing care (both psychiatric and medical) according to the plan of care, monitors and facilitates the provision of a therapeutic, safe milieu, and manage the milieu in the absence of HCT II or HCT III. Administer meds and treatments according to licensing and CMHIP standards for example oral, injection and topical. Follows all patient identification process for med administrations, treatments, etc. Aware of patient allergies, sensitivities of food/drug interactions, drug/drug interactions. Monitors all aspects of patient's care needs to include nutritional, dysphagia and allergies.

Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Administer nursing care (both psychiatric and medical) according to the plan of care, monitors and facilitates the provision of a therapeutic, safe milieu, and manage the milieu in the absence of HCT II or HCT III. .

  • Administer meds and treatments according to licensing and CMHIP standards for example oral, injection and topical. Awareness of patient allergies, sensitivities of food/drug interactions, drug/drug interactions.

  • Physical care of patients according to established policies and procedures.

  • Follow all patient identification process for med administrations, treatments, etc.

  • Monitors all aspects of patient's care needs to include nutritional, dysphagia and allergies.

  • Assesses psychiatric and discharge needs, plans, implements, evaluates, and documents treatment plans consisting of therapeutic interventions such as individual counseling, formal and informal treatment and teaching groups, and behavioral plans using nursing theory and concepts.

  • Must participate in all Code 0, CTI, and fire drills as they occur.

  • Position will be required to work any unit in the hospital to meet the needs of business and will perform duties within the scope of their practice.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned or required.

Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)

Special Qualifications: Maintains active and unencumbered Colorado License (LPT or LPN)

Psychiatric Technicians must have a Colorado license.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current, valid certification as a paramedic in the State of Colorado

Required Competencies:

  • Ability to maintain required licensure/credentials

  • Knowledge of the nursing process to provide supervision and care for medical and psychiatric patient needs.

  • Dependable, adaptable, and responsible.

  • A strong work ethic based on a foundation of self-motivation, loyalty, honesty, and integrity.

  • Customer/Personal Service - knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services, this includes needs assessment.

  • Psychology - knowledge of human behavior and performance, individual difference in ability, personality, and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders.

  • Active Listening.

  • Judgment, Decision Making, and Problem Sensitivity - the ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong; to include not only solving the problem, but recognizing there is a problem.

  • Oral and Written Communication Skills - the ability to speak and write effectively; providing valid and pertinent information to supervisors, coworkers, and subordinates.

  • Monitoring/Assessing employee performance and/or client behaviors.

  • Organizational Skills

Conditions of Employment:

  • Maintains active and unencumbered Colorado License (LPT or LPN)

  • May be required to work evening or weekend shifts, holidays, voluntary or mandatory overtime both in the clinic, or on patient units throughout CMHHIP

  • Shall not initiate or engage in sexual, social, personal or financial relationships with patients either during or anytime after hospitalization, even if the patient requests or initiates such a relationship. All relationships with current or former patients must be disclosed on your application.

  • Successfully pass all modules of the CMHHIP New Employee Orientation core curriculum to include English reading comprehension, relevant competency assessments and written/practical exams in Defensive Tactics

  • Physically able to perform the duties required for the position, including kneeling, lifting arms above head, restraining others, and several other physical requirements.

  • Work in situations involving assaultive behavior, physical control of another person and/or restraint situations

  • Ability to read and comprehend the English language; effectively and fluently communicates in English, both verbally and in writing

  • Work in an environment with fluctuating noise and temperature (hot and cold) which may include working outdoors in inclement weather and/or concrete floor/wall work settings

  • Willing and able to travel

  • Work in a secure facility in locked and unlocked environments.

  • Former State employees who were disciplinarily terminated or resigned in lieu of termination must (1) disclose that information on the application (2) provide an explanation why the prior termination or resignation should not disqualify the applicant from the current position, (3) provide the employee number from the applicant's prior State employment. Absent extraordinary circumstances, prior disciplinary termination or resignation in lieu of termination and failure to provide this information will disqualify the applicant from future State employment with CDHS

Essential Attributes:

  • Possess the physical ability to successfully complete the Colorado Mental Health Institute at Pueblo's required orientation/training

  • Must be able to see and hear in order to observe, address and respond to potential breaches in safety and security

  • The ability to work in situations involving assaultive behavior, physical control of another person and/or restraint situations.

  • Must be able to lift up to 50+ pounds on occasion.
