Description
Job Summary: Plans, organizes and implements the Center Disability Student program. Responsible for counseling and guidance of disabled students.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Demonstrates and abides by the Company Core Values and the operating principles.
Participates in initial screening of disabled students, conducts an assessment of students' needs and ability to benefit from the Job Corps Program and coordinates living quarters prior to student's arrival. Conducts pre-arrival contact with the new disabled students to ensure all requirements are met prior to their arrival.
Works closely with the Regional Office and Health Services Administrator to ensure the appropriateness of applicants prior to acceptance.
Performs vocational assessments of disabled students.
Develops work based learning experience sites and the placement of disabled students.
Identifies and conducts Center wide training associated with the Disability Program requirements.
Identifies and acquires special equipment and expendable items for the Disability Program.
Confers with other staff members to increase the disabled student's adaptations/modifications to programs on Center.
Develops contacts with state and community agencies representing the disabled and acts as liaison between these agencies and the Center.
Works closely with local Vocational Rehabilitation Agencies to ensure that applicants have been formally assessed by partnering agency. Ensures that eligible students are signed up with Vocational Rehab and Social Security Income within their first month in the Program.
Develops referrals to and receives reports from Health Services with respect to speech therapy, psychological evaluations and special health problems and provides appropriate follow-up information.
Provides counseling services to disabled students. Assists disabled students in handling special problems.
Participates in P/PEP panels.
Provides transportation (as needed) for all disabled students.
Provides interpreting services when needed.
Conducts a sign language class for all students and staff.
Provides the Health Services Administrator, on a monthly basis, a recap of the activity of all disabled students.
Develops and maintains appropriate recreational activities, including Special Olympics, to meet the needs of the disabled students.
Conducts an assessment of disabled student's vocational offerings and evaluates effectiveness of program.
Attends all weekly Core team meetings and Regional Office Disability Conference Calls.
Attends staff training sessions as required.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
Qualifications:
Minimum: High school graduate or equivalent with two years' college required. Two years' experience working with disabled youth.
Preferred: Bachelor's degree.
Knowledge: Knowledge of disability resources in the community. Proficient in the use of sign language. Good organizational skills. Good interpersonal and communication skills. Valid California driver's license. Must obtain and maintain valid CPR/First Aid certification.
