EMPLOYMENT

TERM: The season of the sport, plus the three week window, and offseason clinics and meetings

SALARY: In accordance with the Coaches Salary Schedule approved by the Hampshire County Board of

Education

EVALUATION: Performance in this position will be evaluated by the building principal/immediate supervisor and

in accordance with WV State Code §18A-2-12, WV State Board Policy 5310, and HCBOE Evaluation Policies 3220.02 and 4220.01

JOB SUMMARY: Provide appropriate instruction to students athletes in the assigned sport; Plan, organize, and schedule a regular program of practices and games

QUALIFICATIONS:

Valid teaching certificate licensing the individual to teach or hold a WV coaching authorization; Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18-5-15c and/or §18A-3-10, as appropriate; experience as a participant or coach of the sport; first aid and CPR training certificate required; complete concussion and head injury recognition and return-to-play protocol course approved by the WVSSAC; other qualifications as determined by WVDE, WVSSAC, and school administrator

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Keep informed of the academic progress of student athletics during the season of the sport. Check grades each grading period to ensure athletes are eligible to participate.

  • Assume responsibility for all matters relating to the organization and administration of the team under his/her direction

  • Plan, organize, and schedule a regular program of practices during the season; coordinate with other head coaches during the legal practicing in the three-week off-season as allowed by the WVSSAC; schedule must be submitted to the athletic administrator by June 1

  • Enforce discipline and sportsmanlike behavior at all times, and establish and oversee penalties for breach of such standards by individual participants; Must make participants aware of rules and penalties at the BEGINNING of the season; follow the athletic manual, if available

  • Know and enforce all county, school, WVDE, WVSSAC, and federal rules/regulations, including team travel, school, and transportation policies

  • Develop high caliber and quality instruction by teaching the necessary fundamental skills necessary for the athlete to achieve personal and team success

  • Develop positive relationships with the following: the sport participants, student body, faculty, parents, and community (county), game officials, news media, opponents, athletic administrator, and principal

  • Delegate responsibilities to his/her coaching staff and their assigned duties with the approval of both the athletic administrator and building principal

  • Attend all coaches' meetings called by the athletic administrator; attend pertinent coaching clinics, if possible

  • Maintain and prepare for use of equipment as well as practice and game areas with concern for the safety of the student athlete

  • Prepare a detailed equipment inventory and supply request list and submit it to the athletic administrator two weeks after the conclusion of the season

  • Assist in fundraising activities and events for the total athletic program

  • Handle all athletic injuries in lieu of an athletic trainer

  • Assume duties of collecting tickets for various athletic events; assignments will be scheduled by the athletic administrator

  • Assume duties of working in concession stand and/or secure personnel from their sport to work

  • Prepare a list of letter winners and award winners for the sport, and turn the list into the athletic administrator within ten days of the conclusion of the season

  • Assume responsibility for supervision of student athletes before and after games and practices until all student athletes have left school property; this includes supervision in the locker room and on the bus;

  • Assume responsibility for riding the bus with the athletes to and from games, unless waived by prior approval from the athletic administrator

  • Supervise assistant coaches, managers, time and score keepers, and other support personnel in cooperation with the principal and athletic administrator

  • Attend all mandatory WVSSAC meetings; if delinquent, the coach will be responsible for the fine

  • Attend all booster group meetings that may be organized or have representative present (if applicable)

  • Hold parent meeting before the beginning of the season to explain expectations for the athletes, criteria for lettering, and awards; answer parent's questions

  • Motivate staff and players toward positive, desired goals of achieving success

  • Command respect by example in appearance, manners, behavior, and language on the field, floor, pool, links or playing court, and in public

  • Call in scores to the Martinsburg Journal, Cumberland Times-News, and Hampshire Review; give scores to athletic administrator for records to be sent to WVSSAC (if applicable)

  • Assume other duties as assigned by the principal and/or athletic administrator

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may frequently lift and/or move at least 10 pounds of materials. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, the ability to adjust focus. The position required the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff members.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Most commonly, the educational setting is indoors with outdoor settings for recess and field trip activities. The noise level in the work environment is low to moderate (20-60dB). Exceptions include gymnasiums as well as vocational/technical laboratories where the noise levels may be moderate to loud (60-90 dB).
