DESCRIPTION

This position is considered a Safety-Sensitive position. Applicants who pass the interview process will be subject to drug and alcohol testing.

The purpose of this class within the organization is to oversee and supervise tennis teaching programs within the Recreation Department.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Essential Functions:

Must be able to communicate with others in spoken and written English to ensure the safe and efficient operations of the business.

Develops, implements, and promotes a comprehensive tennis instructional program. Recruits, trains, and supervises tennis instructors; develops and implements working agreements. Coordinates tournaments on a state, local and national level; handles scheduling, promotion, and facilities.

Assists in the daily operations of the facility as a part of the team to ensure a quality experience by users. Serves as the professional subject matter expert for tennis in an advisory and leadership role for the comprehensive tennis program; provides private tennis lessons; confers with Facility Superintendent on new initiatives.

Coordinates staff and instruction scheduling; matches player to instructor; ensures daily functions of instruction are met. Maintains and updates records and documentation of instruction, fees, and services. Greets and interacts with players; accepts payment for play; handles questions and concerns; ensures needs are met; provides a safe and friendly environment.

Management:

The management responsibilities for this position include overseeing all operational aspects of the tennis program, including program development, staff recruitment and training, tournament coordination, scheduling, and facility use. It also involves liaising with the Facility Superintendent about new initiatives, acting as the tennis subject matter expert, providing private lessons, ensuring the high quality of instruction through monitoring and documentation, and fostering a safe and friendly environment for all participants.

Personnel:

Recommend staff levels of department. Prepare job descriptions in accordance with City policies.

Retain personnel needed to perform operations of department consistent with budgeted appropriations. Assess personnel during probationary periods and appropriateness of continued retention. Perform performance evaluations on not less than annual basis. Assess employee discipline when necessary.

Additional Duties:

Performs other work as assigned.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands for the position include frequent movement, regular standing, walking, bending, running, lifting/moving equipment weighing up to 50 pounds, continuous use of hands and arms, and resilience to outdoor weather conditions.

OFF-DUTY TENNIS PRO

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF AUTHORITY TO TEACH TENNIS LESSONS

ON CITY PROPERTY WHEN NOT SCHEDULED TO WORK FOR CITY

("Tennis Pro") and City of Murfreesboro ("City") hereby acknowledge and understand that Tennis Pro may utilize City Property to conduct off-duty tennis related instruction when Tennis Pro is not scheduled to work for the City of Murfreesboro as the full-time City Tennis Pro. Furthermore, when Tennis Pro is engaged as an off-duty Tennis Pro/Instructor and independent contractor, both parties acknowledge and understand:

1.Any time spent by Tennis Pro conducting non-City tennis instruction will not be considered compensable time worked for the City.

2.Tennis Pro will be responsible for scheduling and reserving any court-time needed for non-City tennis instruction/lessons. Such court time will be provided free of charge to Tennis Pro.

3.Tennis Pro's off-duty clients will be responsible for any applicable facility fees.

4.Tennis Pro will be responsible for collecting all fees paid by individuals for any non-City tennis instruction/lessons taught by off-duty Tennis Pro.

5.Tennis Pro will be responsible for paying any taxes for off-duty fees collected by Tennis Pro.

6.The City of Murfreesboro Workers' Compensation coverage will not cover any injury I might suffer while Tennis Pro is performing any duties within the scope of engagement as an off-duty Tennis Pro/Instructor.

7.Tennis Pro will not allow off-duty non-City tennis instruction/lessons to interfere with Tennis Pro's regularly assigned duties and responsibilities set forth in the Tennis Pro job description and as otherwise assigned.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Requires an associate degree or specialized courses/training equivalent to satisfactory completion of two years of college in Recreation, Athletics, or closely related field.

Requires six years of progressively responsible experience as a tennis coach, tennis instructor, or closely related experience.

Special Certifications and Licenses:

Must possess a driver's license valid in the State of Tennessee.

Certification by an internationally recognized tennis organization is required.
