JOB DESCRIPTION

General Statement of Duties

Under direct supervision of the Athletic Supervisor, the Head Swimming Coach is responsible for coaching and providing direction to the participants so that they might achieve a high level of skill as well as appreciation for discipline, sportsmanship, and teamwork in` swimming. Incumbent must lead and instruct swimmers of all ages in various stroke mechanics, training programs, and safety rules.

Essential Functions

The primary duties for the incumbent include:

a. Instructs and demonstrates skill sets and techniques necessary for individual and team achievement in swimming.

b. Instruct class sizes of approximately 60 to 100 participants.

c. Required to administer extreme caution and safety while conducting swimming practices and meets.

d. Develops appropriate training programs and practice schedules.

e. Completes injury and incident report for any participant injured within 24 hours even if student athlete does not see physician.

f. Will perform other related duties that are required and assigned.

Examples of Worked performed (not all-inclusive)

This position supervises assistant coaches under his/her jurisdiction.

a. Travels with participants on the team bus both to and from swimming meets.

b. Adheres to all financial policies of the City regarding the collection and disbursement of money, expenses, and receipts.

c. Makes recommendations regarding the purchase of uniforms, equipment and supplies.

d. Enforces discipline policies and emphasizes sportsmanship and healthy lifestyles.

e. Maintains, completes, and submits required paperwork for TAAF registration.

f. Interacts thoughtfully and courteously with participants, staff, parents, fellow coaches, and officials and resolves conflict in a professional manner.

g. Assigns duties to all assistant coaches under his/her jurisdiction.

h. Professionally represents the Department and the City in interactions with participants, parents, community, and staff.

i. Must verify that all participants have paid their fees and are officially enrolled and documented in the class roster.

j. Ensures that medical and safety requirements are adhered to.

k. Ensures that appropriate rules and regulations regarding the conduct of athletic activities and participants are explained and followed.

l. Will perform other related duties that are required and assigned.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements

  • Required to have high school diploma or equivalent GED and/or a minimum of two (2) years related experience. Prior successful experience working in a school setting or coaching student athletes strongly preferred.

  • Requires the incumbent to hold current valid class "C" driver's license from the Texas Department of Public Safety with a satisfactory driving record.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a part-time, non-exempt, seasonal position, with a 19-hour work week. Incumbent must have the ability to work flexible hours including holidays, evenings, and weekends, if needed. Participation in City sponsored special events, trainings, or meetings may be required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge - Knowledge of safety hazards and necessary safety precautions sufficient to be able to establish a safe environment for swim program participants. Knowledge of basic fundamentals and techniques of athletics, fitness, cultural/social activities and/or arts and crafts sufficient to be able to perform a variety of duties related to the work assignment.

Knowledge of inventory techniques sufficient to be able to maintain an adequate level of supplies. Knowledge of the techniques, principles and regulations of recreation, day care and sports programs. Knowledge of lead work principles and practices sufficient to be able to establish priorities, assign and review work and resolve problems.

Abilities- Develop and administer swimming programs suited to the needs of the community; Plan, organize, coordinate, and direct the development and implementation of swimming programs; Analyze, interpret, and explain section policies and procedures; supervise and train program participants; Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the working environment and with those contacted in the course of work.
