Job Title: Substitute Cook

FLSA Status: Part Time Non-Exempt School Year Job Grade: 1

Reports to: Cafeteria Manager Revision Date: December 2016

Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Cafeteria Manager the incumbent is responsible for the preparation and service of meals and the implementation of the food service program in compliance with Head Start Performance Standards and USDA guidelines.

Supervision Exercised: None

Typical Physical Demands: Physical stamina is required to tolerate continuous standing, stooping, reaching, grasping, kneeling, walking, bending, and lifting objects weighing up to 50 lbs.

Requires full range of body motion, including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Occasionally requires working under stressful conditions and irregular hours. Requires the completion and acceptable results of a physical examination and TB screening per the rules and regulations of the Head Start Program.

Typical Working Conditions: Duties are typically performed in areas related to cafeteria and kitchen and performed while walking or standing.

The ability to withstand temperature variances common to food service facilities is required. May require automobile travel to various branches, training, seminars and workshops.

Job Segments:

  • Observes and promotes safe work practices and procedure while maintaining sanitation and cleanliness in the food service area.

  • Responsible for ensuring the cleanliness of all dishes, cooking utensils, equipment, and various other food service items found in a cafeteria setting.

  • Assists in the preparation of purchase orders for food and supplies according to established policies and procedures.

  • Assists the Cafeteria Manager with receiving and storing food in accordance with Head Start Program guidelines.

  • Assists in the serving of meals and snacks according to established timeline.

  • Accurately completes and submits all required daily, weekly, and monthly food service reports.

  • Adheres to uniform and personal hygiene requirements.

  • Accepts and demonstrates the Character Development Values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.

  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Education/Experience:

  • High School Diploma or satisfactory completion of the GED.

  • One to three years' previous experience in cafeteria setting preferred.

  • Certifications required within 45 days of hire: CPR/AED, BBP, and First Aid

  • Excellent interpersonal and problem solving skills with the ability to effectively manage others.

  • Excellent computer skills and experience with standard business software.

  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community

  • Position requires a clear criminal background check to include an MVR (Motor Vehicle Report), if applicable

Job Segments: * Is alert, awake and attentive in the classroom to monitor and ensure the safety of the children. Maintains proper Teacher to Children ratio at all times. * Maintain a clean, safe, orderly, and stimulating developmentally and age appropriate environment that promotes learning and meets children's individual needs and interests which ensures children meet educational outcomes. * Ensure classroom complies with licensing standards and regulations. * Participates in parent teacher conferences, home visits, and required center-level meetings.
