This position is safety-sensitive and therefore requires pre-employment verifications including, but not limited to, child-sensitive background checks and new hire physical; and/or may require a post-offer drug screen and fingerprinting session.

The Head Start Assistant Teacher position is 100% grant-funded with an anticipated grant end date of June 30, 2024.

Under the supervision of the Lead Teacher/Center Supervisor, the Teacher Assistant will assist in providing a developmentally appropriate curriculum for children in assigned classrooms and in completing supplemental responsibilities related to the education component.

Essential Functions:

Assists in planning and carrying out lesson plans; assists in assessment and setting goals for children; assists in maintaining accurate records and reports; assists in keeping the environment orderly and clean; rides bus with children when needed; encourages parent participation in program and serves as Teacher in the Teacher's absence.

Minimum Qualifications:

Must have a High School Diploma or GED and a Preschool CDA with six months experience in working with young children, either as a paid worker or as a volunteer.

Desirable Qualifications:

A two-year Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education is desirable. The applicant should have the ability to relate to children and adults.

The above standards express the minimum standards of education and experience for this position. Other combinations of education and experience, if evaluated as equivalent, may qualify the applicant for consideration. Parents of Head Start children, if a qualified applicant, will be given preference.

A physical examination and TB skin test or chest X-ray are required prior to working with children. Must be willing to enroll in Child Development Associate (CDA) Training and obtain a credential as program funds are available.

Under the supervision of the Lead Teacher/Center Supervisor, the Teacher will provide a well-planned, developmentally appropriate curriculum for assigned children and carry out supplementary activities related to the education component. Essential Functions: Assesses children's developmental level and plans program to meet their individual needs, organizes the classroom to meet the needs of the children and provides the best environment for the curriculum; writes and implements lesson plans with the help of the Teacher Assistant; involves parents in the education of their child and encourages them to become involved in all aspects of the program; supervises Teacher Assistant, Volunteers and other assigned workers and provides training for parents. Minimum Qualifications: Associates or Bachelors Degree or in Early Childhood Education or a related field with a minimum of 1 year or more of experience with 3 or 4-year-old children in a pre-school classroom setting. Student teaching will fulfill the requirement of 1 year of experience. If Associate, Bachelor or Masters Degree in ECE, student teaching experience would qualify applicants. Desired Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood with preschool certification or a Bachelor's Degree in Child and Families Studies with preschool certification. The applicant should have demonstrated knowledge, skills and abilities as follows: knowledge about child growth and development; needs of children and the ability to communicate with children and adults.
