The District Head School Nurse shall advise the building principals regarding health services and through him/her shall supervise the activities of the school nurses as released time permits.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • New Jersey School Nurse Certificate

  • BA Degree

  • Three (3) years' school nursing experience

  • Required criminal history background check, physical and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status. (CURRENT EMPLOYEES EXEMPT)

Performance Responsibilities:

Assist administration and medical inspector in carrying out school health services and to supervise the activities through the principal or the school nurse.

Assist in promoting safety in the school.

To keep building principals informed of health conditions and services and to make recommendations for improvement.

To have responsibility to see that health records on all students are being properly and correctly kept.

To arrange for all physical screenings, in each building, of students and staff and to see that follow-up of results is properly done.

Arrange annual Tuberculosis screening of designated students and employees for the school system.

To assist in the development of the Health Curriculum K-12.

To be responsible for requisitioning medical supplies for the health rooms and to prepare budgets.

Submit health reports to the Director of Special Services when requested and furnish teachers with pertinent health information on pupils.

To serve as a member of the advisory team in the placement of children in classes for the handicapped.

To coordinate all staff conferences and in-service education meetings relating to health services and problems.

Cooperate through the administration with outside agencies which are interested in the health and welfare of children.

To consult, confer or speak with individuals or groups when requested with reference to the school health program or special health problems.

To provide in-service training for teachers to enable them to better understand current health problems of youth.

To serve as a school nurse.

To demonstrate the concept of professional responsibility by presenting a neat appearance and proper decorum to the community by continually displaying a high standard of behavior in the school setting, by maintaining satisfactory habits of attendance and punctuality, and interacting in a positive way with staff and students.

To maintain official health records.

To conduct effective evaluations of the health program.

To maintain an ongoing and up-to-date awareness of recent trends in health program and education and innovative methods of proven merit that may be incorporated into the curriculum and program.

To maintain continual communication with the Director.

To expedite the rules and regulations of the school, the district, and the State of New Jersey in regards to prescribed conduct for teachers, students, and other members of the school community.

To be responsible for the general condition of those physical areas under the direct jurisdiction of the Head School Nurse.

To be accountable for all those materials and supplies, which are provided for the head school nurses' use to carry on the academic program.

To maintain a professional attitude, in all professional relationships concerning district affairs, district regulations, district administration, as well as students and parents of the school community.

To provide opportunities for special help and assistance within the Head School Nurses' day to those requiring such help to complete their work satisfactorily.

To further the cause of good human relations and human understanding by responding positively to the district programs aimed at improving these areas.

To be responsive to the student in his/her developmental process by belong available, willing, and understanding when dealing with the problems of the individual, where feasible.

To participate in curricular activities including articulation and development of curriculum and health programs in order to provide a relevant and meaningful program.

To carry out explicitly the administrative directives of the district in all matters pertaining to the district program.

To actively contribute to the planning and development of the health area and total curriculum by working cooperatively with district personnel.

To actively engage in continual professional growth by participating in workshops, conferences, and in-service programs provided by the district that fall within the accepted practices of the negotiated contract.

Preparing frequent homework assignments where appropriate based on reinforcement of previously taught experiences.

Developing positive behavioral characteristics that lead to the highest form of human behavior, control of self and sensitivity toward others.

Developing updated plans for the use of a substitute teacher.

Avoiding sarcasm or reflecting negatively regarding the student, his/her family, or social background.

To carry out all additional duties and directives that are requested by the Director of Special Services or Chief Administrator, which fall within the scope of staff responsibility, except if prohibited by the contract.
