Head of Rare Genetic Disease Biology

As the leader for Rare Genetic Disease (RGD) biology at Agios, this role will play a substantial strategic role in guiding the scientific direction of Agios' RGD portfolio which emphasizes innovative first-in-class therapies for inborn errors of metabolism. We are seeking an innovative and agile leader who brings significant expertise in disease biology as well as a passion for professional development and coaching.

Key Responsibilities

  • Refines and advances Agios' RGD strategy. Sets and advocates future directions for Agios RGD research and ensures successful execution of leading-edge approaches to identify and prosecute novel therapeutic strategies

  • Ensures delivery of a robust pipeline of high-value, high-confidence programs spanning from Project/Target selection through Drug Discovery to Development Candidate nomination

  • Creative and scientifically-oriented leader who stays close to the science and drives data-driven decisions

  • Guides and supports the efforts of several interconnected teams of biologists, including drug discovery biology teams and teams focused on identification and validation of novel RGD targets

  • Propagates a development-oriented culture & champions the growth of a talented and aspirational team of RGD biologists

  • Maintains high-functioning and synergistic cross-functional relationships across the Agios discovery organization

  • Stays informed on trends and emerging developments regarding research and development in RGD

  • Communicates science and strategy effectively in a variety of internal and external settings

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in biology or related field with 10-15+ years of industry experience

  • Demonstrated success in all phases of drug discovery, with a track record of successful advancement of novel, first-in-class therapeutics

  • Expertise and track record of scientific leadership in orphan genetic diseases preferably inborn errors of metabolism. Scientists with expertise in related biologic areas (such as metabolic disorders or neurosciences) will also be considered

  • Demonstrated success in managing and mentoring a diverse set of biology scientists

  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to building, guiding, and participating in effective teams and fostering productive internal collaborations

  • Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills to work across functions and within external collaborations, and a demonstrated ability to organize and communicate complex data sets in a clear and concise manner to cross-functional audiences

  • Experience in strategic planning, project leadership, and laboratory and budget management in a matrixed organization

  • Strong organizational and time-management skills and demonstrated ability to lead complex cross-functional collaborations including managing relationships with academic collaborators and CROs

  • Desire and capacity to participate in a dynamic and fast-paced research setting

  • Recognized scientific innovation and accomplishment evidenced by strong record of publication and conference presentations in RGD biology

The focus of this position is to provide support for the testing and development of lentiviral vector-modified hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) for various disease indications. We are looking for a motivated individual with excellent technical skills and a strong team spirit. Activities include: * Participate in ongoing research projects investigating novel strategies utilizing gene modified HSCs for correcting genetic diseases. * Perform complex technical work related to stem cell biology, viral gene transfer, and molecular biology, including tissue culture, flow cytometry, western blot, enzymatic assays, and qPCR. * Develop analytical assays including, but not limited to, functional potency assays for LVV-based gene therapy products. * Participate in designing, writing and updating protocols. * Performance of general laboratory tasks, including maintenance of equipment. * Maintain accurate and reliable record keeping including database management, notebooks, and all other pertinent documentation. * Compile, analyze, and present data to functional teams. Qualifications: * BS in cell biology, molecular biology or similar discipline with at least 4 years related experience in a laboratory environment. * Mammalian cell culture experience is required, primary cell experience desired. * Experience with ELISA, flow cytometry and qPCR is desired. * Experience with lentiviral vector transduction preferred. * Ability to take ownership of projects and results. * Independently motivated, detail oriented and good problem-solving ability. * Excellent organizational skills, sufficient to multi-task in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities. * Strong verbal and written skills; ability to provide focus and clarity; able to handle confidential information and material appropriately. * Ability to work in a collaborative team environment, meet deadlines, prioritize and balance work from multiple individuals. * Be ready to embrace the principles of the bluebird bio culture: b colorful, b cooperative, and b yourself.
